The Stone

See the natural beauty of Impala Black up close — the surface texture, colour depth, and veining that make this granite unique.

Dense South African gabbro from Rustenburg with a uniform dark grey character and fine mineral grain.

Impala Black granite is one of the most widely specified dark natural stones in the world, and for good reason. Quarried from the Rustenburg Bushveld Complex in South Africa's Northwest Province, this gabbro-classification stone presents a dense, consistently dark surface composed of interlocking charcoal and mid-grey mineral grains interspersed with fine flecks of off-white and lighter grey. There is no veining — instead, the pattern is a tightly packed, granular mosaic of small angular particles that creates an understated, quietly authoritative surface with remarkable visual consistency from slab to slab.

Geologically, Impala Black is classified as a norite or gabbro rather than a true granite, formed from slow-cooling mafic magma rich in pyroxene and plagioclase feldspar. This gives it exceptional density, extremely low porosity, and a hardness that makes it one of the most durable worktop stones available. It handles heat without flinching, resists scratches from daily kitchen use, and its dark colouring is naturally forgiving of everyday marks and water spots — particularly in the honed or leathered finishes.

At In2Stone, we find Impala Black works brilliantly in contemporary kitchens where clean lines and dark surfaces define the space. It pairs particularly well with white or light grey cabinetry for high-contrast schemes, or with dark timber and matte black hardware for a rich, tonal approach. Whether polished to a mirror-like depth or given a tactile honed finish, Impala Black delivers the kind of quiet confidence that only genuine natural stone can offer.

Frequently Asked

Questions About Impala Black

Is Impala Black a true granite?
Technically, Impala Black is classified as a gabbro or norite — a type of igneous rock with a slightly different mineral composition to true granite. It is richer in pyroxene and plagioclase feldspar than quartz. However, in the stone trade it is universally sold as granite, and its performance characteristics — extreme hardness, low porosity, and excellent durability — are fully comparable.
Does Impala Black granite show fingerprints or water marks?
On a polished finish, water spots and fingerprints can be visible, though less so than on lighter stones. If this concerns you, consider the honed or leathered finish — both have a lower sheen that naturally disguises everyday marks and makes the surface more forgiving in a busy kitchen.
How scratch-resistant is Impala Black granite?
Very. With a Mohs hardness of 6–7, only materials harder than quartz — such as diamond or corundum — will scratch it. Everyday kitchen activities like chopping, placing crockery, or sliding pans will not damage the surface, though we always recommend using chopping boards to protect both your knives and the stone's polish.
Where exactly is Impala Black quarried?
Impala Black comes from the Rustenburg Bushveld Complex in South Africa's Northwest Province. This is one of the largest layered igneous intrusions on Earth, stretching across an area of roughly 66,000 square kilometres. The quarries in this region — including Bosspruit and Marikana — have been producing Impala Black for decades.
What maintenance does Impala Black granite need?
Impala Black is one of the lower-maintenance natural stones thanks to its extremely low porosity. Seal it annually with a quality impregnating sealer, and clean daily with warm water and a pH-neutral cleaner. Its dark colour naturally hides minor stains, but prompt blotting of oil or wine spills is still good practice.
★★★★★
"We decided to get bespoke granite work tops for our new kitchen and have to say that we are over the moon with them. From the outset, Ian was very professional when selecting the stone, he listened to what we wanted, went through all of the possibilities that we could have for our worktops and went through the process in detail once we had made a decision. The templateing and fitting was carried out by an incredibly professional and helpful team run by Kev, who knew exactly what they were doing and just got on and made my kitchen look amazing. I would highly recommend In2stone for a helpful, knowledgeable and professional service from start to finish."
