Beautiful Design Styles

From compact BBQ stations to full-scale alfresco cooking areas, outdoor stone worktops bring the same luxury and resilience you'd expect indoors — but engineered to thrive under open skies. Here are three approaches we build for homeowners across Portsmouth, Hampshire and the surrounding area.

Dark Granite BBQ Kitchen

Dark Granite BBQ Kitchen

Deep charcoal granite with crystalline mineral flecks forms a robust, heat-resistant worktop around a built-in grill. The natural stone's density and darkness make it highly resistant to weathering, staining, and UV fading — a surface that only improves with age in a garden setting.

Modern Sintered Stone Kitchen

Your Guide to Outdoor Kitchen Worktops

Bringing the Kitchen Outdoors

An outdoor kitchen is no longer a luxury reserved for Mediterranean villas. across Portsmouth, Hampshire and the surrounding area, more homeowners are investing in purpose-built garden cooking areas — and the worktop you choose is arguably the most important decision you’ll make. It needs to handle direct sunlight, driving rain, and the occasional frost without cracking, fading, or staining. It needs to shrug off hot pans straight off the grill, endure marinades and red wine spills, and still look stunning years from now.

At In2stone, we’ve been working with stone in every setting for over 25 years. Ian’s career began in a Norwegian quarry, and his worldwide experience with materials and climates means we know exactly which stones thrive outdoors in British weather — and which ones don’t. That understanding is what sets us apart from suppliers who simply sell you a slab and wish you luck.

Which Materials Work Best Outdoors?

Not every stone is suited to outdoor life. The key challenges are UV exposure, freeze-thaw cycles, moisture absorption, and direct heat from barbecues and pizza ovens. Here are the materials we recommend — and why.

Sintered Stone — The Ultimate Outdoor Surface

Sintered stone brands like Dekton and Neolith are engineered specifically to handle extreme conditions. Created under immense heat and pressure, sintered stone is completely non-porous, UV-stable, frost-proof, and resistant to scratches, stains, and thermal shock. You can place a scorching hot pan directly from the grill onto a Dekton worktop without a flicker of concern. It won’t fade in direct sunlight, won’t absorb rainwater, and won’t crack in sub-zero temperatures.

Best for: Year-round outdoor kitchens, exposed settings, homeowners who want zero maintenance.

Granite — Natural Toughness

Dark granites are a superb natural choice for outdoor worktops. Granite is one of the hardest natural stones on earth — extremely resistant to heat, scratches, and daily wear. Darker varieties like Black Pearl, Steel Grey, and Nero Impala perform best outdoors because their mineral density makes them less susceptible to weathering and UV fading than lighter granites. Each slab carries millions of years of geological history in its unique patterns.

Best for: BBQ surrounds, traditional garden kitchens, and anyone who wants rugged natural beauty.

Porcelain — Versatile and Low Maintenance

Large-format porcelain surfaces offer excellent outdoor performance at a competitive price point. Non-porous by nature, porcelain won’t absorb water or harbour bacteria. It’s available in a huge range of colours and finishes — from concrete effects to marble looks — and handles UV exposure without colour shift. While it’s less heat-resistant than sintered stone or granite, porcelain is more than adequate for most outdoor cooking setups.

Best for: Covered outdoor kitchens, garden entertaining areas, and homeowners who want design variety on a budget.

What About Quartz and Marble?

We don’t recommend quartz or marble for exposed outdoor use. Quartz contains resin binders that degrade under prolonged UV exposure, causing discolouration and surface damage over time. Marble is porous and softer, making it vulnerable to staining from food and drink, and susceptible to frost damage in winter. If your outdoor kitchen is under a permanent covered structure and shielded from direct sunlight, quartz may be an option — but for any exposed setting, sintered stone, granite, or porcelain are far safer choices.

What to Consider for Your Outdoor Kitchen

Weather Exposure

The level of exposure your outdoor kitchen faces is the single biggest factor in material selection. A fully exposed garden station needs UV-stable, frost-resistant stone. A kitchen under a solid-roof pergola or covered terrace has more flexibility. During your initial conversation with us, we’ll assess your setup and guide you towards the best material for your specific conditions.

Heat Resistance

Outdoor cooking generates serious heat. If you’re using a built-in gas grill, charcoal BBQ, or wood-fired pizza oven, your worktop needs to handle direct contact with hot pans, grill trays, and pizza peels without scorching or cracking. Sintered stone and granite excel here. Porcelain handles moderate heat well but benefits from trivets for very hot items.

Worktop Size and Layout

Outdoor kitchens come in all shapes — from compact single-run BBQ stations to full L-shaped or U-shaped layouts with prep areas, sinks, and storage. We fabricate every worktop to your exact dimensions, including cut-outs for grills, sinks, and servery hatches. There are no standard sizes — everything is bespoke.

Edge Profiles

For outdoor worktops, we typically recommend a simple straight edge or a pencil round edge. These profiles shed rainwater cleanly and don’t collect debris in grooves. More decorative profiles like ogee or bullnose can work beautifully under covered structures where water runoff is less of a concern.

Drainage and Sealing

Even the most resilient stone benefits from thoughtful installation. We ensure worktops have a very slight fall towards the front edge so rainwater drains rather than pooling. For natural stones like granite, we apply a high-quality impregnating sealer before installation — a simple annual top-up keeps it performing for decades.

Our Outdoor Kitchen Worktop Process

From concept to completion, the same small team looks after your project throughout. No subcontractors, no handoffs, and no surprises:

  1. Showroom visit — Browse over 500 stone samples, compare outdoor-suitable materials side by side, and discuss your garden layout with people who genuinely understand stone in every setting
  2. Free quote — Transparent pricing tailored to your exact requirements, including any cut-outs for grills, sinks, or appliances. The quote is the price
  3. Site assessment — We visit your garden to assess the outdoor kitchen frame, check levels, and take precision measurements
  4. In-house fabrication — Your worktops are cut, profiled, and finished in our own workshop by the same team who measured your space
  5. Expert installation — Fitted, sealed, and finished to the highest standard, with the same care and attention we bring to every indoor kitchen

Care and Maintenance

Outdoor worktops need minimal care, especially if you’ve chosen the right material for your exposure level:

  • Sintered stone: Virtually indestructible. Clean with any household cleaner. No sealing, no special care.
  • Granite: Seal annually with a quality impregnating sealer. Wipe spills promptly. Dark granites are especially forgiving.
  • Porcelain: Non-porous, no sealing needed. Clean with warm soapy water or any standard kitchen cleaner.

In winter, there’s no need to cover sintered stone or granite surfaces — they handle frost and ice without issue. Porcelain is also frost-resistant in the thicknesses we supply. If your worktop is under an open pergola, a simple cover during prolonged snow or ice can extend its pristine appearance, though it’s not essential.

Frequently Asked

Outdoor Kitchen Worktops Questions

What is the best material for outdoor kitchen worktops?
The best material for an outdoor kitchen worktop depends on how exposed it is to the elements. For fully exposed settings, sintered stone — brands like Dekton and Neolith — is the standout choice. It's completely non-porous, UV-stable, frost-proof, and handles direct heat from grills and pizza ovens without any risk of damage. Dark granites like Black Pearl and Nero Impala are also excellent outdoor performers with natural toughness and minimal maintenance needs. Porcelain is a versatile third option, especially under covered structures, offering a wide range of colours and finishes with good weather resistance. We don't recommend quartz or marble for exposed outdoor use, as quartz resin can degrade under UV light, and marble is too porous for British weather. During your showroom visit, we'll help you weigh up the options based on your specific garden setup.
How much do outdoor kitchen worktops cost?
The cost of outdoor kitchen worktops depends on the material, the size and complexity of the layout, and the number of cut-outs needed for grills, sinks, and appliances. Porcelain tends to be the most affordable option, while sintered stone and premium granites sit at the higher end. Because every outdoor kitchen is bespoke — fabricated to your exact dimensions and specifications — we provide transparent, itemised quotes rather than generic price ranges. There are no hidden costs, and the quote is the price. We consistently beat kitchen retailers and online suppliers on comparable materials because we fabricate in-house with no middlemen. Get in touch with your measurements or plans and we'll provide a free, no-obligation quote tailored to your project.
Are outdoor kitchen worktops resistant to UV and weather damage?
The right outdoor worktop material is designed to handle everything British weather throws at it. Sintered stone is the gold standard for weather resistance — it's completely UV-stable, meaning it won't fade or discolour even after years of direct sunlight. It's also frost-proof, non-porous, and impervious to rain and moisture absorption. Dark granites perform extremely well outdoors too; their mineral density makes them highly resistant to UV fading and freeze-thaw cycles, though we recommend annual sealing to maintain optimal protection. Porcelain is also UV-stable and frost-resistant in the thicknesses we supply. The materials to avoid outdoors are quartz (resin degrades under UV) and marble (porous and susceptible to frost damage). We'll guide you to the right material based on your garden's exposure level.
Can quartz or marble worktops be used in an outdoor kitchen?
We generally advise against using quartz or marble in exposed outdoor kitchens. Quartz worktops contain polymer resin binders that break down under prolonged ultraviolet exposure, leading to discolouration, warping, and surface degradation over time. This isn't a risk with occasional sunlight — it's a gradual effect of sustained outdoor exposure over months and years. Marble presents different challenges: it's a porous, relatively soft natural stone that absorbs moisture, stains from food and drink, and is vulnerable to frost damage during British winters. If your outdoor kitchen is under a permanent solid-roof structure and fully shielded from direct sunlight and rain, quartz may be a viable option — but for any exposed or semi-exposed setting, sintered stone, granite, or porcelain are far more reliable choices. We're always happy to talk through the specifics of your setup.
What size worktop do I need for an outdoor kitchen?
There's no standard size for an outdoor kitchen worktop — every one we build is bespoke, fabricated to your exact dimensions. The typical outdoor kitchen ranges from a compact 1.5-metre single-run BBQ station to a full 4-metre L-shaped or U-shaped layout with separate zones for grilling, preparation, and serving. We recommend a minimum worktop depth of 650mm to comfortably accommodate a built-in grill and provide usable prep space alongside it. For island-style designs, 900mm or wider allows seating on one side and cooking on the other. We'll template your outdoor kitchen frame precisely, accounting for all cut-outs — grill openings, sink basins, servery hatches — and fabricate each section to fit perfectly. Bring your plans or rough measurements to the showroom and we can help you work out the ideal layout.
What edge profiles work best for outdoor kitchen worktops?
For outdoor kitchen worktops, we typically recommend simpler edge profiles that perform well in an exposed environment. A straight edge or pencil round edge are the most popular choices — they shed rainwater cleanly, don't collect debris in grooves, and give a clean contemporary look that suits most outdoor kitchen designs. A bevelled edge is another good option, adding a subtle chamfer that catches the light without creating water traps. More decorative profiles like ogee or bullnose can work beautifully if your outdoor kitchen is under a covered pergola or solid roof, where water runoff and debris accumulation are less of a concern. We offer all eight of our standard edge profiles for outdoor worktops — visit our showroom to see and feel the options, or browse our edge profiles guide online.
How long does outdoor kitchen worktop installation take?
From confirmed order to completed installation, the typical turnaround for an outdoor kitchen worktop is around 14 working days — the same as our indoor kitchen process. After you confirm your order and pay the 50% deposit, we'll arrange a site visit to take precision measurements of your outdoor kitchen frame, checking levels and marking out all cut-out positions for grills, sinks, and appliances. Fabrication takes around 7 to 10 working days in our own workshop, and installation is usually completed within a single day. The actual fitting involves positioning the stone sections, making fine adjustments, bonding and sealing joints, and applying protective sealant where needed. We coordinate around your garden project timeline — whether that means fitting around a landscaper, a builder constructing the kitchen frame, or simply waiting for dry weather.
How do I maintain and clean outdoor kitchen worktops?
Maintaining your outdoor kitchen worktop is straightforward, especially if you've chosen the right material for your exposure level. Sintered stone requires the least care of all — simply wipe it down with any household cleaner or warm soapy water after cooking. It needs no sealing, no special products, and handles rain, frost, and UV without deterioration. Granite worktops should be sealed with a quality impregnating sealer before use and resealed once a year — a simple 15-minute job that keeps the stone performing beautifully for decades. Wipe up food and drink spills promptly, especially acidic substances like lemon juice or wine. Porcelain is non-porous and needs no sealing; warm soapy water is all you need. None of these materials require covering in winter — they're all frost-resistant — though a simple protective cover during prolonged snow or ice will keep your worktop looking pristine if you prefer.
