Indian granite from Telangana with bold reddish-brown crystalline patches across a deep charcoal-black base.

Tan Brown granite is quarried from the Karimnagar district of Telangana in Central India — one of the most established sources of warm-toned dark granites in the world. The slab presents a very dark charcoal grey to nearly black base, densely interrupted by large irregular patches of warm rich reddish-brown and coppery tones. These brown sections display a prominent vertically-oriented columnar crystalline structure that gives a strong sense of depth and movement. Scattered throughout are clusters of mottled light grey and fine bright white speckles, some appearing as delicate thread-like lines or small reflective inclusions.

Tan Brown has been one of India's most successful granite exports for decades — its bold warm-on-dark contrast and reliable availability have made it a staple of kitchen worktop markets across the UK, Europe, and North America. The columnar crystalline structure within the brown patches is particularly distinctive — these are large feldspar and hornblende crystals that crystallised with a preferred orientation, creating a striated texture visible in the polished surface. This is granite at its most openly geological. Performance is excellent: Mohs 6–7 hardness, very low porosity, outstanding heat resistance, and the structural density that comes from Telangana's ancient Deccan formations.

In2Stone recommends Tan Brown as a warm, characterful dark granite that offers genuine visual presence at a competitive price point. The bold reddish-brown patches bring warmth to any kitchen, while the dark base keeps the stone grounded and practical. It pairs naturally with cream, warm white, and timber cabinetry, and complements hardware in brushed bronze or antique brass.

Frequently Asked

Questions About Tan Brown

Where is Tan Brown granite quarried?
Tan Brown comes from the Karimnagar district of Telangana in Central India. This region has been one of the world's most prolific sources of warm-toned dark granites for decades, with well-established quarries that produce consistent quality and reliable supply volumes.
What creates the columnar crystal structure?
The striated texture within the brown patches comes from large feldspar and hornblende crystals that crystallised with a preferred orientation during the granite's formation deep underground. This directional crystallisation creates the distinctive columnar appearance that gives Tan Brown its visual depth.
Is Tan Brown consistent between slabs?
Reasonably consistent — the characteristic pattern of brown patches on a dark base remains recognisable from slab to slab, though the exact size and distribution of the brown areas will vary. Slab selection is recommended to confirm the specific balance of brown and dark base you prefer.
How popular is Tan Brown in the UK?
Very popular — Tan Brown has been one of the best-selling dark granites in the UK market for many years. Its combination of bold visual character, reliable availability, and competitive pricing has made it a kitchen worktop staple. Its popularity reflects both its quality and its broad design appeal.
What maintenance does Tan Brown require?
Standard granite care — annual sealing with a quality impregnating stone sealer, daily cleaning with warm water and pH-neutral soap. The dark base and busy pattern make Tan Brown very practical for daily kitchen use, as it conceals minor marks and wear effectively.
★★★★★
"We decided to get bespoke granite work tops for our new kitchen and have to say that we are over the moon with them. From the outset, Ian was very professional when selecting the stone, he listened to what we wanted, went through all of the possibilities that we could have for our worktops and went through the process in detail once we had made a decision. The templateing and fitting was carried out by an incredibly professional and helpful team run by Kev, who knew exactly what they were doing and just got on and made my kitchen look amazing. I would highly recommend In2stone for a helpful, knowledgeable and professional service from start to finish."
