Stepped Granite Cascade

Three dark charcoal granite slabs at graduated heights form a staircase cascade, with water spilling in thin sheets from one level to the next. The honed finish reveals natural mineral flecks under warm accent uplighting, while the sharp right-angled geometry creates a bold focal point against soft garden planting.

Porcelain Blade Spillway

Porcelain Blade Spillway

A marble-effect porcelain panel clads a garden retaining wall, with a precision-cut horizontal slot releasing a wide blade of water into a long stone trough below. The veined surface catches afternoon light beautifully, and the non-porous porcelain composition means the stone stays pristine without sealing or specialist maintenance.

Tiered Sintered Stone Tower

Tiered Sintered Stone Tower

Rectangular sintered stone slabs in graduating grey tones are stacked at alternating offsets, creating a geometric zigzag tower with water trickling gently from each cantilevered edge to the next. Integrated LED lighting at each tier casts a warm glow after dark — a striking centrepiece for a contemporary patio.

Your Guide to Stone Water Features

Engineered Stone, Moving Water

There is something fundamentally calming about water and stone together. It’s an instinct as old as architecture itself — from Roman fountains to Japanese garden streams. A well-designed stone water feature brings that sense of tranquillity into your own garden, terrace, or courtyard, while adding a visual centrepiece that draws the eye and creates a natural focal point.

At In2stone, we approach water features the same way we approach everything else — as stonemasons and fabricators, not resellers. We work with your landscape designer, architect, or directly with you to engineer bespoke water features from the same premium materials we use for worktops, cladding, and pool surrounds. Every piece is cut, profiled, and finished in our own workshop, using the same CNC precision and hand-finishing techniques that have defined our work for over 25 years.

What We Build

Our water features are architectural by nature — clean lines, geometric forms, and right-angled precision. We’re not sculptors carving ornamental figures; we’re stonemasons who work with flat stone panels and slabs to create contemporary structures that complement modern garden design. Think vertical water walls, stepped cascades with sheet waterfalls, horizontal blade spillways, tiered towers, and freestanding stone columns with integrated water channels.

The design possibilities are genuinely wide open:

  • Water walls — A single large stone panel or multiple panels mounted vertically, with water sheeting down the polished face into a trough or basin below
  • Stepped cascades — Rectangular slabs at graduated heights, with water spilling from one level to the next in thin waterfalls
  • Blade spillways — A horizontal slot cut into a stone-clad wall, releasing a wide, even curtain of water into a channel below
  • Tiered towers — Stacked slabs at alternating offsets, creating a geometric zigzag with water trickling from each cantilevered edge
  • Integrated wall features — Water elements built into garden retaining walls, boundary walls, or exterior cladding as a seamless part of the hard landscaping

Which Materials Work Best?

Granite — Natural Strength and Character

Dark granites like Black Pearl and Nero Impala are superbly suited to water features. Their extreme density means they absorb virtually no moisture, and the natural mineral flecks in the stone catch light and water beautifully, creating subtle sparkle and depth. A polished granite water wall at dusk with warm uplighting is genuinely spectacular. Granite is also one of the hardest natural stones on earth, so it handles freeze-thaw cycles year after year without concern.

Best for: Freestanding water walls, stepped cascades, and anyone who wants the authentic character of natural stone.

Sintered Stone — Engineered Precision

Sintered stone brands like Dekton and Neolith are purpose-built for outdoor environments. They’re completely non-porous, UV-stable, and frost-proof — which means the colour and finish you choose on day one stays exactly the same for decades. The uniform tone and texture of sintered stone make it particularly effective for geometric, minimalist designs where consistency and clean lines are paramount.

Best for: Modern tiered features, multi-panel installations, and architectural projects where uniform colour and zero maintenance are priorities.

Porcelain — Versatile and Striking

Large-format porcelain offers an extraordinary range of visual effects — marble veining, concrete textures, stone replications — in a material that’s completely weatherproof and non-porous. A marble-effect porcelain blade spillway in a garden wall creates a look that would cost a fortune in genuine marble, yet performs far better outdoors. Porcelain is also significantly lighter than natural stone, making it easier to mount on vertical structures and retaining walls.

Best for: Blade spillways built into walls, large-scale cladded water walls, and projects where design variety and weight considerations matter.

Engineering and Installation

Every water feature we build is a collaboration between our stonemasons and your plumber or landscape contractor. We fabricate the stone elements — cutting, profiling, and finishing every panel and slab to precise dimensions in our workshop. We can work from architect’s drawings, a landscape designer’s specifications, or from a concept you bring to us at the showroom.

Key engineering considerations we manage include:

  • Stone thickness — We select the appropriate thickness for each element based on its structural role, from 12mm porcelain cladding panels to 30mm granite freestanding slabs
  • Edge profiles — Clean mitred edges, pencil rounds, or raw-cut faces depending on the design intent
  • Water channels — Precision-cut grooves or slots for blade spillways and integrated water flow
  • Drainage — Ensuring slight falls and drainage channels prevent water from pooling where it shouldn’t
  • Mounting — Advising on substrate structures for vertical panels and ensuring adequate support for cantilevered elements

Care and Maintenance

Stone water features require very little maintenance, especially when the right material is chosen for the design:

  • Granite: An annual application of quality impregnating sealer keeps the stone performing beautifully. Wipe away any algae or mineral deposits with a non-abrasive cleaner
  • Sintered stone: No sealing required — ever. Simply clean with any household cleaner to remove water marks or algae buildup
  • Porcelain: Non-porous and completely weatherproof. A periodic clean with warm soapy water is all that’s needed

In winter, all three materials handle frost and ice without concern in the thicknesses we supply. The water pump and plumbing may need winterising depending on your setup, but the stone itself is impervious to British weather.

Frequently Asked

Stone Water Features Questions

What types of stone are suitable for outdoor water features?
We recommend granite, sintered stone, and porcelain for outdoor water features. Granite is one of the hardest natural stones available, with exceptional resistance to water absorption, frost damage, and surface wear — darker varieties like Black Pearl and Steel Grey perform particularly well. Sintered stone brands like Dekton and Neolith are completely non-porous and UV-stable, making them virtually maintenance-free around water. Porcelain is also non-porous and frost-resistant, with a wide range of finishes available. We advise against quartz and marble for exposed outdoor water features, as quartz resin binders degrade under UV and marble is too porous for constant water contact.
Can you build a water feature to my landscape designer's or architect's specifications?
Absolutely — this is exactly how we work. We engineer custom stone water features to specifications or measurements supplied by your landscape designer, architect, or garden designer. Whether you provide full technical drawings or a concept sketch, we fabricate every component in our own workshop using CNC machinery and hand-finishing by experienced stonemasons. If your designer provides dimensioned plans, we work directly from those. If you have a concept but need help refining the detail, our team can advise on material selection, water flow considerations, and structural requirements.
How much does a custom stone water feature cost?
The cost of a bespoke stone water feature depends on several factors: the size and complexity of the design, the stone material you choose, the number of individual components, and the level of finishing required. Because every feature we build is unique, we provide a free, no-obligation quote based on your specific design. The quote is fully transparent and inclusive — material, fabrication, and installation with no hidden extras. Contact us with your designer's drawings or your ideas and we'll put together a detailed quotation.
Will a stone water feature stain or discolour from limescale and algae?
Performance depends on the material. Sintered stone and porcelain are completely non-porous, meaning limescale and algae struggle to gain any foothold on the surface — a periodic wipe or rinse is all that's needed. Granite is naturally dense and resistant, though darker varieties are particularly forgiving; an annual application of an impregnating sealer keeps the stone protected and looking its best. All three materials handle mineral-rich water far better than marble or quartz, which is why we recommend them specifically for water features.
Do you handle the plumbing and pump installation as well as the stonework?
We fabricate and install the stonework itself — the basins, channels, pillars, panels, and any other stone components. For the plumbing, pump, and electrical connections, we work alongside your landscaper or a specialist water feature installer. We design the stone components with all necessary water channels, overflow details, and pipe access points built in, so everything integrates seamlessly when the plumber connects it. If you need a recommendation for a trusted plumber or electrician in the Portsmouth area, we're happy to point you in the right direction.
How long does it take to build and install a custom stone water feature?
Timescales depend on the complexity of your design and the materials involved. For a straightforward single-element feature — such as a wall fountain or a standalone bowl — you can typically expect around three to four weeks from confirmed order to installation. Larger or more complex multi-element features with curved profiles and intricate detailing may take four to six weeks. We keep you informed throughout and coordinate with your landscaper to ensure the stonework is ready when the site is prepared.
Can I match my water feature stone to other outdoor stonework like a pool surround or outdoor kitchen?
Yes, and this is one of the real advantages of working with a single stone fabricator for your entire outdoor project. We can use the same material across your water feature, pool surround, outdoor kitchen, and cladding to create a completely cohesive design. Alternatively, we can deliberately contrast materials — for example, a dark granite water feature against pale porcelain paving — to create visual interest. Our team can advise on which combinations work best for your garden's overall design.
How do I maintain a stone water feature through winter?
The stone itself requires very little attention. Granite, sintered stone, and porcelain all handle British frost and freeze-thaw cycles without cracking or damage. If your feature has a mechanical pump, we recommend draining the water system during extended freezing spells to protect the pump and pipework — the stonework is unaffected. In terms of ongoing care, granite benefits from an annual impregnating sealer, while sintered stone and porcelain need nothing more than an occasional rinse. A stiff brush and clean water will handle any algae build-up on granite; sintered stone and porcelain resist algae naturally.
What types of stone water features can In2stone build?
We fabricate a range of architectural stone water features including vertical water walls, stepped cascading towers, horizontal blade spillways, tiered zigzag columns, and features integrated into garden retaining walls. Every design is geometric and contemporary — clean right angles and precise stone panels rather than sculpted or ornamental forms. We work from your landscape designer's drawings or develop a concept with you from scratch.
Which stone material is best for a water feature?
It depends on the design and your aesthetic preference. Dark granites like Black Pearl create a stunning natural look with mineral flecks that sparkle under water and uplighting. Sintered stones like Dekton offer perfect colour consistency and zero maintenance. Porcelain gives the widest range of visual effects — marble veining, concrete textures — in a lightweight, non-porous format. All three are completely weatherproof for British gardens.
How tall can a stone water feature be?
There is no fixed height limit. We have built freestanding water walls exceeding two metres and stepped cascade towers at various heights to suit individual gardens. The practical constraints are the supporting structure and the water pump capacity rather than the stone itself. We will advise on appropriate stone thickness and mounting requirements for your design.
Does a stone water feature need sealing?
It depends on the material. Granite water features benefit from an annual application of a quality impregnating sealer to maintain their appearance. Sintered stone and porcelain are completely non-porous and never need sealing — water simply runs off the surface without absorbing. We apply any necessary sealer before delivery.
Can you build a water feature into an existing garden wall?
Yes. Blade spillways and integrated water panels are specifically designed to be built into retaining walls, boundary walls, or exterior cladding. We fabricate the stone elements to your wall dimensions, and your landscape contractor or plumber handles the water supply and drainage integration. We can also supply matching stone cladding for the surrounding wall if needed.
How much does a bespoke stone water feature cost?
Every water feature is unique, so pricing depends on the material chosen, the size and complexity of the design, and the number of stone elements involved. As a rough guide, a simple single-panel granite water wall starts from around £1,500 for the stone fabrication. More complex multi-tier or multi-panel designs will be higher. We provide a detailed, transparent quote after discussing your requirements.
Will a stone water feature survive winter frost?
Absolutely. Granite, sintered stone and porcelain in the thicknesses we supply are all completely frost-proof and will not crack, flake, or deteriorate in sub-zero temperatures. The water pump and plumbing may need winterising depending on your setup, but the stone itself is entirely impervious to British winter weather.
Do you install the water feature or just supply the stone?
We fabricate all the stone elements in-house — cutting, profiling, and finishing every panel and slab to precise dimensions. For installation, we typically work alongside your landscape contractor or plumber, who handles the water supply, pump, and drainage. We can advise on structural support and mounting requirements to ensure everything fits perfectly.
