The Nature of Granite
Granite forms when molten magma cools slowly deep within the earth’s crust, allowing large crystals of quartz, feldspar, and mica to develop over millions of years. This slow crystallisation produces the distinctive speckled, mottled, and sometimes dramatically veined appearance that makes every granite slab genuinely one of a kind.
The geological diversity of granite is staggering. Brazilian granites tend to feature bold, flowing patterns with rich golds, blues, and greens. Indian granites are often more uniform — the iconic Black Galaxy with its bronze flecks, or the warm movement of Tan Brown. African granites bring deep, sombre tones and exceptional hardness. Each quarry, each block, each individual slab tells its own geological story.
Why Granite Endures
Despite the rise of engineered alternatives, granite has held its ground as one of the most popular worktop materials in the UK. The reasons are practical as much as aesthetic.
Heat resistance is where granite genuinely excels. You can place a hot pan directly from the oven onto a granite worktop without any risk of damage — something that cannot be said of quartz, solid surface, or laminate. For serious home cooks, this alone can be decisive.
Hardness is another natural strength. Granite sits between 6 and 7 on the Mohs scale, making it exceptionally resistant to scratching. Kitchen knives, ceramic dishes, and everyday kitchen activity simply won’t mark the surface.
Each slab is unique. If the idea of owning a surface that exists nowhere else on earth appeals to you — a surface formed by geological forces over 300 million years — granite delivers that in a way no factory-produced material ever can.
Applications for Granite
Granite’s combination of heat resistance, hardness, and natural beauty makes it suitable for a wide range of applications. Kitchen worktops remain the core use case, but granite performs equally well as bathroom vanity surfaces, bar tops, fireplace surrounds, and window sills.
For outdoor kitchens and barbecue areas, granite is an excellent choice. Unlike quartz, natural granite is UV-stable and will not fade or discolour in direct sunlight. Its heat resistance also makes it ideal for surfaces near grills, pizza ovens, and outdoor cooking stations.
Granite is less commonly used for very thin applications — splashbacks, for instance — because its natural hardness makes cutting thin, uniform pieces more challenging and expensive than with sintered stone or porcelain. For full-height splashbacks or cladding, other materials may offer better value.
Care and Maintenance
Granite is a porous natural stone, which means it can absorb liquids if left unprotected. However, modern impregnating sealers make this a non-issue in practice. A quality sealer, applied once a year, penetrates the stone’s surface and prevents liquids from being absorbed. The process takes about fifteen minutes and keeps the stone performing perfectly.
Day-to-day cleaning is straightforward — warm water and a mild detergent is all that’s needed. Avoid acidic cleaners (vinegar, lemon juice, citrus-based sprays) as these can gradually etch the polished surface over time. For stubborn marks, a pH-neutral stone cleaner is recommended.
With proper care, a granite worktop will last a lifetime. Many granite surfaces in historic buildings are centuries old and still in excellent condition. In a domestic kitchen, you should expect your granite worktop to outlast the kitchen itself — potentially multiple times over.
Choosing the Right Granite
Granite varies enormously in price, from affordable entry-level options like Bianco Sardo and Steel Grey to premium exotic slabs like Blue Bahia, Patagonia, and Van Gogh. The price is driven primarily by rarity, quarry location, and the visual drama of the stone.
When selecting granite, we strongly recommend viewing the actual slab that will be used in your kitchen, not just a small sample. Granite’s natural variation means a 10cm sample can only hint at the full pattern and movement of a 3-metre slab. At In2stone, we help customers select specific slabs and can arrange slab yard visits for premium selections.
Consider the finish as well. Polished granite delivers a high-gloss, mirror-like surface that intensifies the stone’s colour and crystal structure. Honed granite offers a smooth, matte appearance that feels more contemporary and shows fewer fingerprints. Leathered or brushed finishes add a tactile, textured quality that works beautifully in rustic and industrial kitchen designs.
Is Granite Right For You?
Granite surfaces are well suited for kitchen worktops, bathroom vanity tops, splashbacks, feature walls, commercial surfaces and outdoor kitchens. Granite is scratch-resistant, heat-resistant and exceptionally hard-wearing, making it a practical choice for busy households and high-traffic areas. With strong UV resistance, these surfaces are also suitable for areas with direct sunlight — including conservatories and south-facing kitchens. With products across the budget-friendly to premium spectrum, granite offers options for a range of project budgets. Periodic sealing is recommended to protect the surface and maintain its natural beauty over time.

About Granite
Granite is an igneous rock formed from slowly cooled magma deep beneath the earth's surface. Composed primarily of quartz, feldspar, and mica, it is one of the hardest and most durable natural stones available for worktop applications. Each granite slab carries the geological fingerprint of its origin — from the tropical quarries of Brazil to the ancient shields of India and Africa — resulting in an extraordinary diversity of colours, crystal structures, and patterns.
As a kitchen worktop, granite offers exceptional heat resistance, scratch resistance, and longevity. It can withstand hot pans placed directly on its surface without damage, and its crystalline hardness resists everyday wear. While it requires periodic sealing to maintain stain resistance, granite remains one of the most popular natural stone choices for homeowners who value authenticity, durability, and the unique beauty of a material formed over hundreds of millions of years.
