The Stone

See the natural beauty of Impala M up close — the surface texture, colour depth, and veining that make this granite unique.

Style:

Speckled Polished Fine Grain

Medium-grade Rustenburg gabbro — dark charcoal densely peppered with light grey mineral flecks.

Impala M granite is the medium-grade selection from the celebrated Rustenburg quarries in South Africa's Northwest Province. Its slab presents a very dark charcoal base — almost black — densely peppered with fine to medium-grained flecks of light grey, off-white, and subtle mid-grey mineral grains. The distribution is highly uniform and busy without any directional veining or movement, creating a consistent, composed surface that reads as dark from a distance but reveals real mineral detail up close.

The 'M' designation indicates a medium block grading, and compared to the D variant, Impala M typically shows slightly more contrast between the dark base and the lighter mineral flecks. This gives it a livelier, more textured appearance while retaining the same geological credentials — gabbro-classification igneous rock with a Mohs hardness of 6–7, extremely low porosity, and outstanding heat resistance. The polished finish deepens the charcoal tones and brings a subtle sheen that enhances the visual depth of the tightly packed mineral structure.

In2Stone values Impala M for its balance of drama and restraint. Dark enough to anchor a kitchen scheme, yet textured enough to avoid the flat, monolithic appearance of engineered black surfaces. It pairs well with pale timber, white Shaker cabinetry, and stainless steel appliances. For families who want a dark worktop that works hard and looks better with age, Impala M delivers precisely that.

Frequently Asked

Questions About Impala M

What does the 'M' mean in Impala M granite?
The 'M' refers to a medium-grade block selection from the Rustenburg quarries. Compared to the 'D' grade, Impala M typically shows slightly more contrast between the dark charcoal base and the lighter grey mineral flecks. Both grades come from the same geological formation and share identical performance properties.
Would Impala M granite suit a small kitchen?
Dark worktops can work well in smaller kitchens when balanced with lighter cabinetry and good lighting. The speckled mineral pattern in Impala M prevents the surface from feeling flat or oppressive — it has real visual texture and interest. Pair it with white or cream units and adequate under-cabinet lighting for best results.
How does Impala M granite compare to engineered black quartz?
Impala M offers superior heat resistance — you can place hot pans directly on it without risk of scorching, whereas engineered quartz contains resin that can burn. Granite is also naturally UV-stable, so it will not yellow in sunlight. The trade-off is that granite requires annual sealing, while engineered quartz is non-porous. Visually, the natural mineral variation in Impala M gives it a depth and character that uniform engineered surfaces cannot replicate.
Where is Impala M granite from?
Impala M comes from the Rustenburg Bushveld Complex in South Africa's Northwest Province. This is one of the planet's largest geological intrusions, stretching thousands of square kilometres, and has produced premium dark gabbro for the global stone trade for many decades.
What cleaning products should I avoid on Impala M granite?
Avoid acidic cleaners like vinegar or lemon juice, alkaline products like bleach or ammonia-based sprays, and any abrasive scouring pads. These can degrade the sealer and, over time, dull the finish. Stick to warm water with a mild pH-neutral soap and a soft microfibre cloth for daily cleaning.
★★★★★
"We decided to get bespoke granite work tops for our new kitchen and have to say that we are over the moon with them. From the outset, Ian was very professional when selecting the stone, he listened to what we wanted, went through all of the possibilities that we could have for our worktops and went through the process in detail once we had made a decision. The templateing and fitting was carried out by an incredibly professional and helpful team run by Kev, who knew exactly what they were doing and just got on and made my kitchen look amazing. I would highly recommend In2stone for a helpful, knowledgeable and professional service from start to finish."
