Beautiful Design Styles

Whether your pool is a sleek contemporary lap pool or a freeform family oasis, the stone you wrap around it defines the entire outdoor experience. Here are three materials we recommend — and install — for pool surrounds across Portsmouth, Hampshire and the surrounding area.

Dark Granite Coping & Terrace

Dark Granite Coping & Terrace

Polished dark granite with crystalline mineral flecks creates a striking, natural perimeter around the pool. Granite's extraordinary hardness and density make it virtually impervious to cracking, chipping, and weathering — and darker shades resist UV fading and staining far better than lighter alternatives. With a bullnose edge profile, the coping sheds water cleanly and feels comfortable underfoot.

Contemporary Sintered Stone Edge

02 // Sintered Stone

Contemporary Sintered Stone Edge

Sleek grey sintered stone with a honed finish brings a refined, architectural quality to a modern pool setting. Brands like Dekton and Neolith are engineered to withstand every outdoor challenge — completely UV-stable, frost-proof, and non-porous, so pool chemicals, sunscreen, and rain have no impact whatsoever. Zero maintenance and an elegant linear aesthetic make sintered stone the ultimate contemporary pool surround.

Porcelain Pool Terrace

03 // Porcelain

Porcelain Pool Terrace

Large-format cream porcelain coping stones with an anti-slip textured finish create a welcoming, light-filled pool terrace. Porcelain handles direct sunlight without colour shift, shrugs off chlorinated splashes, and never needs sealing. Available in a broad spectrum of finishes from sandstone effects to clean concrete looks, porcelain lets you match your pool surround to any garden style.

Your Guide to Stone Pool Surrounds

Why Stone for Your Pool Surround?

There’s something about a stone-edged pool that simply can’t be replicated with concrete pavers or timber decking. The weight and permanence of natural or engineered stone give your entire outdoor space a sense of solidity and luxury that endures decade after decade. Stone doesn’t warp in summer heat, doesn’t rot after wet winters, and doesn’t lose its colour under relentless UV exposure. It’s the material swimming pools were born to be framed with.

At In2stone, we’ve been working with stone in every conceivable setting for over 25 years — from kitchen worktops and bathroom vanities to outdoor kitchens, water features, and pool surrounds. Ian’s career started in a Norwegian quarry, and decades of worldwide experience with materials and climates means we know exactly which stones perform brilliantly around pools in British weather — and which ones to avoid.

Choosing the Right Material

Pool surrounds face a unique combination of challenges: constant water exposure, UV bombardment, freeze-thaw cycles through British winters, chlorinated splashes, and bare feet walking on them daily. Not every stone handles all of these demands equally. Here’s what we recommend.

Granite — Timeless Natural Strength

Dark granites like Black Pearl, Steel Grey, and Nero Impala are exceptional choices for pool surrounds. Granite is one of the hardest natural stones on the planet, with a density that makes it naturally resistant to water absorption, cracking, and surface wear. Darker varieties perform best poolside because their mineral density minimises UV fading and makes water marks and sunscreen stains far less visible.

We cut granite coping to your exact pool dimensions with a bullnose or pencil-round profile that’s comfortable underfoot and sheds water cleanly. Every slab carries millions of years of geological character — no two pool surrounds will ever look the same.

Best for: Traditional garden settings, heated pools, homeowners who want a natural stone poolside with genuine character.

Sintered Stone — Engineered Perfection

Sintered stone brands like Dekton and Neolith were essentially designed for environments like pool surrounds. Created under extreme heat and pressure, sintered stone is completely non-porous, UV-stable, frost-proof, and resistant to scratches, stains, and chemical exposure. Pool chemicals, sunscreen, red wine, and driving rain simply wipe away. It won’t crack in sub-zero temperatures and won’t fade in years of direct sunlight.

Best for: Modern pool designs, infinity edges, exposed settings with year-round weather, and homeowners who want a truly maintenance-free surface.

Porcelain — Versatile and Slip-Resistant

Large-format porcelain slabs offer superb performance around pools at an accessible price point. Porcelain is non-porous by nature, handles UV exposure without colour shift, and is available with purpose-made anti-slip finishes that provide excellent grip when wet. The range of colours and textures is enormous — from warm sandstone effects to cool concrete looks — giving you real design flexibility.

Best for: Family pools, covered terraces, homeowners who want design variety with strong practical performance.

What We Don’t Recommend Around Pools

We advise against quartz and marble for exposed pool surrounds. Quartz contains resin binders that degrade under prolonged UV, causing discolouration. Marble is porous and softer, making it vulnerable to water staining, chemical etching from chlorine, and frost damage in winter. If your pool area is fully covered and shielded from rain and direct sun, these materials may work — but for standard outdoor pools, granite, sintered stone, and porcelain are far safer choices.

What We Consider for Your Pool Surround

Anti-Slip Safety

Safety around a pool is non-negotiable. We select and finish each stone with grip in mind — whether that’s a textured honed finish on granite, a purpose-made grip surface on porcelain, or the naturally non-slip texture of sintered stone. We can also apply anti-slip treatments to certain polished stones if you prefer a smoother aesthetic without compromising safety.

Coping Profiles and Edge Details

The coping — the stone that forms the very edge of your pool — needs careful design. We typically recommend a bullnose, pencil-round, or square-with-chamfer profile that sheds water away from the pool, reduces the risk of chipped edges, and feels comfortable to sit on or grip when climbing out. Every coping piece is precision-cut to follow the exact geometry of your pool, including curved sections.

Drainage and Water Management

Standing water on pool surrounds is both a safety hazard and a maintenance nuisance. We install coping and terrace stones with a very slight fall away from the pool edge so that splash-back and rainwater drain naturally rather than pooling. Where needed, we incorporate discreet channel drains into the design.

Frost and Weather Resilience

British winters test any outdoor material. All three materials we recommend for pool surrounds handle freeze-thaw cycles without cracking — but correct installation is just as important as material selection. We ensure proper bedding, adequate drainage beneath the stone, and flexible joint treatments that accommodate thermal expansion and contraction.

Our Pool Surround Process

From initial conversation to finished poolside, the same small team looks after your project from start to finish:

  1. Material consultation — Visit our showroom to compare outdoor-suitable stones side by side, or we’ll bring samples to your home. We’ll discuss your pool shape, garden style, and practical requirements with people who genuinely understand stone in outdoor settings
  2. Free quote — Transparent pricing based on your pool dimensions, coping profile, and terrace area. The quote is the price — no hidden extras
  3. Site survey — We visit your pool to check levels, assess the pool frame or patio base, and take precision measurements including any curved sections
  4. In-house fabrication — Coping, terrace slabs, and step treads are all cut and profiled in our own workshop by experienced stonemasons
  5. Expert installation — Fitted, sealed where required, and finished to the highest standard. We treat your garden with the same care and attention we bring to every indoor project

Caring for Your Pool Surround

The right stone requires minimal upkeep:

  • Granite: Apply a quality impregnating sealer once a year. Rinse sunscreen and drink spills promptly. Dark granites are exceptionally forgiving
  • Sintered stone: No sealing, no special care. Clean with any household product or simply hose down
  • Porcelain: Non-porous, no sealing needed. A periodic pressure wash keeps it pristine

In winter, granite and sintered stone handle frost and ice without concern. Porcelain in the thicknesses we use is equally frost-resistant. There’s no need to cover your pool surround — though clearing debris and standing water before deep freezes is good practice.

Frequently Asked

Stone Pool Surrounds Questions

What is the best stone material for a swimming pool surround?
For most exposed outdoor pools in the UK, we recommend three materials: granite, sintered stone, and porcelain. Dark granites like Steel Grey and Nero Impala are exceptionally hard-wearing and naturally resistant to water absorption and UV fading. Sintered stone brands like Dekton and Neolith are completely non-porous, frost-proof, and UV-stable — essentially maintenance-free. Porcelain offers superb performance at a more accessible price point, with purpose-made anti-slip finishes ideal for wet pool edges. We advise against quartz and marble for exposed pool surrounds, as quartz degrades under UV and marble is too porous for constant water contact.
How much does a stone pool surround cost?
The cost varies with material choice, pool size, coping profile, and the area of surrounding terrace. Granite and porcelain coping tend to sit at a mid-range price point, while sintered stone is at the premium end due to its superior technical performance. We provide a detailed, transparent quote based on your exact pool dimensions and requirements — the quote is the price, with no hidden extras. We recommend visiting our showroom to compare samples and discuss options, so we can tailor the specification to your budget.
Is stone safe to walk on around a pool when wet?
Safety is central to every pool surround we design. All three materials we recommend can be finished with textures that provide excellent grip when wet. Granite can be honed or flamed to create a naturally non-slip surface. Porcelain is available with purpose-engineered anti-slip finishes rated for outdoor poolside use. Sintered stone has inherent surface texture that maintains grip even when wet. We also apply additional anti-slip treatments to certain polished surfaces where a smoother aesthetic is preferred without sacrificing safety.
Will stone pool surrounds crack in winter frost?
The materials we recommend — granite, sintered stone, and porcelain — are all frost-resistant and rated for outdoor use in British climates. Sintered stone is completely impervious to freeze-thaw cycles due to its zero porosity. Granite's natural density gives it excellent frost resistance, particularly darker varieties with low water absorption. Porcelain in the thicknesses we supply handles frost without issue. Correct installation is equally important: we ensure proper bedding, adequate sub-surface drainage, and flexible joint treatments that allow for thermal expansion and contraction.
Can you cut stone coping for a curved or irregular-shaped pool?
Absolutely. We fabricate every coping piece to the exact geometry of your pool, including curves, radius corners, and irregular freeform shapes. Our in-house CNC machinery and experienced stonemasons can produce precision-cut pieces that follow even the most complex pool profiles. We take detailed measurements on-site and create templates for curved sections to ensure a seamless fit around the entire perimeter.
What edge profile should I choose for pool coping?
For pool surrounds, we typically recommend a bullnose, pencil-round, or square-with-chamfer edge profile. A bullnose edge is the most popular choice — it's smooth and comfortable to sit on, safe to grip when climbing out of the pool, and sheds water cleanly away from the pool edge. Square edges with a small chamfer offer a more contemporary look while still being safe and practical. We'll discuss the best option during your consultation, taking into account your pool design, stone choice, and personal preference.
Does a stone pool surround need sealing?
It depends on the material. Sintered stone and porcelain are both completely non-porous and never require sealing — they are inherently resistant to water, stains, and chemicals. Granite benefits from an impregnating sealer applied once a year, which takes about 30 minutes and protects the stone from absorbing moisture, sunscreen, and food or drink spills. We apply the initial seal as part of our installation and can advise on the best products for annual top-ups.
How long does it take to install a stone pool surround?
A typical residential pool surround installation takes between three and five days, depending on the pool size, complexity of the coping profile, and the extent of surrounding terrace work. The same team who measured your pool and fabricated your stone in our workshop will carry out the installation — no subcontractors, no handoffs. We work carefully around existing landscaping and pool equipment, and always leave your garden tidy and ready to enjoy.
