Guide

Your Guide to Kitchen Worktops

The Heart of Your Kitchen

Your kitchen worktop is the most-used surface in your home. It’s where you prepare meals, gather with family, and entertain guests. That’s why choosing the right material matters — not just for aesthetics, but for how your kitchen performs day after day.

At In2stone, we’ve been supplying and installing premium stone worktops for over 25 years. We’ve seen thousands of kitchens transformed, and we know which materials work best for every lifestyle and budget.

Which Material Is Best for Kitchen Worktops?

Every stone has its strengths. The right choice depends on how you use your kitchen, your design preferences, and your maintenance expectations.

Quartz worktops are engineered from natural quartz crystals bound with resin, creating a surface that’s non-porous, stain-resistant, and virtually maintenance-free. Brands like Silestone and Caesarstone offer hundreds of colours — from dramatic marble-look veining to understated concrete effects.

Best for: Busy family kitchens, modern designs, and anyone who wants a care-free surface.

Granite — Natural Character

No two granite slabs are alike. Each piece carries millions of years of geological history in its patterns and colours. Granite is extremely hard, heat-resistant, and gives your kitchen a warmth and depth that engineered materials can’t replicate.

Best for: Those who love natural beauty, traditional and transitional kitchens, and serious cooks who want a surface that handles hot pans without flinching.

Marble — Timeless Elegance

Marble has been the material of choice for luxury surfaces for centuries. Its soft veining and warm tones bring an unmistakable sense of refinement to any kitchen. While it requires more care than quartz or granite, many homeowners consider the natural patina that develops over time to be part of marble’s charm.

Best for: Statement kitchens, island centrepieces, and homeowners who appreciate the character of a living material.

Sintered Stone — The Modern Marvel

Sintered stone (brands like Dekton and Neolith) is created by replicating the conditions of natural stone formation — extreme heat and pressure — but in a fraction of the time. The result is an ultra-compact surface that’s resistant to heat, UV, scratches, and stains. It won’t fade in sunlight and can even be used outdoors.

Best for: Outdoor kitchens, high-traffic homes, and anyone who wants maximum durability with zero maintenance.

What to Consider When Choosing Kitchen Worktops

Durability and Daily Use

Think about how your kitchen functions. Do you cook daily? Entertain often? Have young children? A non-porous material like quartz or sintered stone handles spills and stains without stress. Natural stones like granite and marble may need periodic sealing but offer unmatched character.

Heat Resistance

If you regularly place hot pans directly on the worktop, granite and sintered stone are your best options. Quartz handles moderate heat but sustained high temperatures can cause damage. We always recommend using trivets regardless of material — it’s a small habit that protects your investment.

Edge Profiles

The edge profile you choose affects both the look and feel of your worktop. From a simple straight edge to a more decorative ogee or bullnose, each profile changes the character of the stone. See all 8 edge profiles or visit our showroom to see and feel the options in person.

Colour and Design

Your worktop should complement your cabinetry, flooring, and overall kitchen design. Lighter colours open up smaller spaces; darker tones create drama and depth. Our showroom displays over 500 stone samples so you can compare colours side by side under natural light.

Care and Maintenance

Most kitchen worktops need nothing more than a wipe with warm soapy water. For specific care advice:

  • Quartz: Non-porous, no sealing needed. Avoid prolonged UV exposure and extreme heat.
  • Granite: Seal annually with a quality impregnating sealer. Wipe spills promptly.
  • Marble: Seal every 6-12 months. Use cutting boards — acidic foods can etch the surface.
  • Sintered: Virtually indestructible. Clean with any household cleaner.

Frequently Asked

Kitchen Worktops Questions

What is the best material for kitchen worktops?
The best material depends entirely on your lifestyle, budget, and design preferences. Quartz is the most popular choice for busy family kitchens because it is non-porous, stain-resistant, and available in hundreds of colours and patterns. Granite offers natural, one-of-a-kind beauty with excellent heat resistance. Porcelain and sintered stone are increasingly popular for their UV stability and extreme scratch resistance. We stock all of these materials at In2stone, and our showroom in Portsmouth lets you compare full-size slabs side by side before committing.
How much do stone kitchen worktops cost?
Kitchen worktop pricing varies depending on the material, brand, slab size, edge profile, and the complexity of your cut-outs. Every project is different, which is why we provide free, no-obligation quotes tailored to your exact requirements rather than quoting generic price ranges. At In2stone, our quotations are fully inclusive — covering the slab, templating, CNC fabrication, and professional installation — so there are never any hidden surprises.
How long does it take to get new kitchen worktops fitted?
From your first visit to our showroom to completed installation, the typical timeline is around two to four weeks. This includes selecting your stone, scheduling a home template visit where we laser-measure your exact kitchen dimensions, precision-cutting your worktops on our CNC machines, and the final installation. Timescales can vary depending on material availability and the complexity of your kitchen layout.
Do I need to seal my kitchen worktops?
It depends on the material. Engineered quartz, porcelain, and sintered stone are all completely non-porous and never require sealing at any point. Natural stones like granite and marble are porous and do benefit from periodic sealing to prevent staining, typically once every one to two years. We will always advise you on the correct care and maintenance for whatever material you choose.
Can I put hot pans directly on my stone worktop?
Natural stones like granite and porcelain slabs handle heat exceptionally well and you can typically place hot pans directly on them without damage. Engineered quartz, however, contains polymer resins that can be damaged by extreme sudden heat. We always recommend using a trivet or heat mat with quartz worktops to be safe. Your In2stone installer will walk you through the specific care instructions for your chosen material.
What edge profiles are available for kitchen worktops?
We offer a wide range of edge profiles to suit every design style. Popular choices include a simple pencil round for a clean modern look, a bullnose for a classic feel, a chamfer for understated elegance, and a more decorative ogee for traditional kitchens. We also offer mitred edges to create the appearance of a thick, solid stone slab which is particularly striking on kitchen islands. You can view and feel edge profile samples at our Portsmouth showroom.
What is the difference between quartz and granite worktops?
Granite is a natural stone quarried in single slabs, meaning every piece is unique with its own natural veining and mineral patterns. It is extremely heat-resistant but does require periodic sealing. Quartz is an engineered surface made from roughly 93 percent crushed natural quartz bound with polymer resins, giving you a wider choice of consistent colours and patterns. Quartz is non-porous and never needs sealing, but is more sensitive to direct heat. Both are excellent choices and the right one depends on whether you prioritise natural uniqueness or low-maintenance consistency.
How do you measure and template kitchen worktops?
We use a combination of precise hand-templating and laser measurement to create a perfect digital map of your kitchen. Our templater visits your home once your cabinets and units are fully fitted, measuring every corner, angle, and cut-out for sinks, hobs, and taps. This digital template is then transferred directly to our CNC cutting machines, ensuring your worktops fit with millimetre accuracy. The process takes around an hour for a standard kitchen.
Can I have an undermount sink with a stone worktop?
Absolutely. Undermount sinks are one of the most popular choices with stone worktops. Because the sink sits beneath the stone, the worktop edge is exposed, creating a beautiful seamless look that is also far more hygienic than a traditional drop-in sink. Our CNC fabrication process cuts the perfect aperture for your specific sink model, and we polish the exposed edges to a smooth finish.
Do you supply and fit worktops nationwide or just in Portsmouth?
We offer both options. Our full supply-and-fit service covers Portsmouth, Fareham, Gosport, Havant, Waterlooville, Chichester, Southampton and the wider Hampshire, Sussex, Surrey, Dorset and Berkshire region — including showroom consultation, home templating, CNC fabrication in our own workshop, and professional installation by our own fitters. The reach of our installation service depends on the type of project, so please contact us to discuss your requirements. For customers further afield, we offer a UK-wide supply-only service where we fabricate your worktops to specification and arrange collection or delivery. Many customers travel to our Portsmouth showroom from across the UK specifically to see our extensive slab range in person.
