The Stone

See the natural beauty of Indian Black up close — the surface texture, colour depth, and veining that make this granite unique.

Fine-grained southern Indian granite with dense grey-white speckling across a deep off-black base.

Indian Black granite in its standard polished form is a dependable, deeply dark natural stone quarried across southern India's Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu regions. Unlike its Anticato sibling, this variant reveals its mineral composition openly — the deep off-black base is uniformly interspersed with a very fine granular texture of tiny light grey to off-white particles, creating a consistent speckled appearance that adds subtle life to the dark surface. There is no veining or directional movement, only this pervasive, fine-grained mineral pattern that gives the stone an honest, workmanlike character.

The matte or honed finish visible in this slab strips away reflections and lets the mineral grain speak for itself. You see the stone rather than reflections of your kitchen ceiling, and the tactile quality feels grounded and natural. Beneath that surface, the same geological properties that define all granite apply — Mohs 6–7 hardness, heat resistance born from igneous formation, and a dense structure that responds well to annual sealing. Indian Black's tight grain means its porosity is particularly low, making it one of the more forgiving dark granites for daily kitchen use.

In2Stone recommends Indian Black for kitchens where dark worktops need to earn their place through durability and practicality rather than visual drama. It works well alongside white or pale grey cabinetry, pairs naturally with stainless steel appliances, and sits comfortably in both modern and transitional kitchen designs. The fine speckling prevents it from looking flat or artificial — a hallmark of genuine natural stone.

Frequently Asked

Questions About Indian Black

What is the difference between Indian Black and Absolute Black granite?
Indian Black shows a fine, visible granular speckling of light grey and off-white particles across its dark base, whereas Absolute Black is virtually pattern-free — a solid, uninterrupted black surface. Both come from southern India, but they are geologically distinct stones with different mineral compositions and visual characters.
What cabinetry colours complement Indian Black granite?
Indian Black works with a wide range of cabinet colours. White or cream cabinetry creates classic high contrast, pale grey offers a softer tonal scheme, and deep navy or forest green builds a rich, layered look. The neutral dark tone means it rarely clashes — it acts as an anchor that lets other elements define the room's personality.
Will Indian Black granite fade in sunlight?
No. Granite is naturally UV-stable and will not fade, yellow, or discolour when exposed to sunlight. This makes Indian Black a strong choice for kitchens with skylights, large windows, or conservatory extensions where direct sunlight reaches the worktop throughout the day.
Where does Indian Black granite originate?
Indian Black is quarried across several regions in southern India, including Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. These areas contain some of the oldest igneous rock formations in the world, producing dense black granites that are highly valued in the global stone trade for their consistency and durability.
How often does Indian Black granite need resealing?
We recommend annual resealing with a quality penetrating stone sealer. Indian Black's particularly tight grain structure means it is less porous than many granites, so it responds very well to sealing. Between applications, daily cleaning with warm water and a pH-neutral soap keeps the surface in excellent condition.
★★★★★
"We decided to get bespoke granite work tops for our new kitchen and have to say that we are over the moon with them. From the outset, Ian was very professional when selecting the stone, he listened to what we wanted, went through all of the possibilities that we could have for our worktops and went through the process in detail once we had made a decision. The templateing and fitting was carried out by an incredibly professional and helpful team run by Kev, who knew exactly what they were doing and just got on and made my kitchen look amazing. I would highly recommend In2stone for a helpful, knowledgeable and professional service from start to finish."
