The Rarest Natural Stone

Onyx stands apart from every other worktop material. It is not chosen for its practicality, its hardness, or its ease of maintenance. Onyx is chosen because it produces a visual effect that no other material on earth can achieve — a stone that glows from within when light passes through it.

This translucency is the result of onyx’s unique geological formation. While granite forms from cooling magma and marble from compressed limestone, onyx grows incrementally in cave environments. Mineral-laden water seeps through rock and deposits thin layers of calcite, one upon another, over thousands of years. Each layer carries slightly different mineral compositions, producing the distinctive banding and colour variations — honey golds, vivid greens, soft pinks, dramatic whites, and deep ambers — that make onyx immediately recognisable.

Working with Onyx

Onyx is a calcite-based stone with a Mohs hardness of around 3, placing it in the same category as marble but typically somewhat softer. This means it requires respect and appropriate application selection. It scratches more easily than granite or quartz, it etches when exposed to acids, and it can chip if subjected to sharp impacts.

None of this diminishes its value — it simply means onyx needs to be used where its extraordinary beauty can shine without being subjected to the daily abuse of a busy family kitchen’s primary work surface. In the right application, onyx is utterly transformative.

Fabrication requires specialist skills. Onyx slabs are often reinforced with a fibreglass mesh backing during processing to prevent cracking, and cutting must be performed carefully to preserve the stone’s delicate structure. At In2stone, we work with experienced fabricators who understand the material’s specific requirements.

Applications Where Onyx Excels

Backlit feature walls are onyx’s signature application. A large onyx slab mounted in front of LED panels creates a glowing surface of extraordinary beauty — the light passes through the stone’s translucent layers, illuminating the internal banding and colour variations in a way that seems almost impossible. This effect works spectacularly in bathrooms, reception areas, bars, and living spaces.

Bar tops and cocktail counters exploit onyx’s drama and translucency. A backlit onyx bar top in a home entertaining space or commercial venue becomes the undisputed focal point of the room. The surface sees less intensive use than a kitchen worktop, making it a more appropriate application for the material.

Bathroom vanity tops are an excellent use of onyx. The surface sees gentle daily use — cosmetics, soap, toothpaste — and the bathroom setting allows for dramatic lighting that brings out the stone’s translucent qualities. An onyx vanity in a guest bathroom makes an unforgettable impression.

Accent surfaces and furniture — coffee tables, side tables, shelving, and decorative panels — allow onyx to be incorporated into residential projects without subjecting it to kitchen-level demands.

While onyx can technically be used as a kitchen worktop, we would typically recommend it for secondary surfaces — an island or breakfast bar — rather than the main work area around the hob and sink.

The Onyx Colour Palette

Onyx’s colour range is unique in the stone world:

  • White Onyx — Pure, luminous white with delicate banding. The most popular choice for backlit applications, creating an ethereal, almost celestial glow.
  • Honey Onyx — Warm amber and gold tones with rich, translucent depth. Perhaps the most dramatic onyx variety when backlit, producing a deep golden glow.
  • Green Onyx — Striking emerald and jade tones with flowing patterns. A bold choice that makes an immediate impact in any setting.
  • Pink Onyx — Soft rose and blush tones with gentle banding. Increasingly popular in luxury bathroom designs.
  • Blue Onyx — Exceptionally rare, with cool blue-grey tones and dramatic movement. Among the most expensive natural stones in the world.

Care, Maintenance, and Investment

Onyx requires attentive care. Regular sealing — every 3 to 6 months for surfaces in active use — is essential to protect against staining. Daily cleaning should use only pH-neutral products; acidic cleaners will etch the surface. Trivets and coasters should be used consistently.

Onyx sits at the very top of the natural stone market in terms of pricing. Rare varieties can exceed £1,000 per square metre for the slab alone. But for clients who understand the material and select appropriate applications, onyx delivers a level of visual theatre that justifies every penny. There is simply nothing else like it.

Is Onyx Right For You?

Onyx surfaces are well suited for kitchen worktops, bathroom vanity tops, splashbacks, feature walls and commercial surfaces. Onyx offers natural heat resistance, making it a beautiful and functional choice for kitchens. Positioned at the high-end to ultra-premium end of the market, onyx is ideal for those seeking a truly premium finish for design-led kitchens and bathrooms.

About Onyx

Onyx is one of the rarest and most visually dramatic natural stones. Formed from layered calcite deposits in cave environments over thousands of years, it features extraordinary translucency that allows light to pass through the stone, creating a breathtaking glowing effect when backlit. Unlike most natural stones which are quarried from mountainsides and open pits, onyx forms in geological cavities where mineral-rich water deposits successive layers of calcite, building up the distinctive banded, swirled, and clouded patterns that make every onyx slab a natural work of art.

Onyx is reserved for luxury feature surfaces where visual impact is the primary consideration. It is softer and more delicate than granite or quartzite, requiring careful handling and appropriate application selection. But in the right setting — a backlit bar top, a statement bathroom wall, a dramatic reception desk — nothing else comes close to the visual theatre that onyx delivers.

Frequently Asked

Questions About Onyx

What is onyx and what makes it different from marble?
Onyx is a banded calcite formed by layers of calcium carbonate deposited by mineral-rich water over thousands of years. Unlike marble, which forms under intense heat and pressure deep underground, onyx forms near the surface in caves and springs. The key difference is translucency — onyx transmits light through its body, enabling dramatic backlighting effects that marble simply cannot replicate. Both are calcium carbonate, but onyx's layered structure gives it unique banding and light-transmitting properties.
Can onyx be used for kitchen worktops?
Onyx can be used in kitchens but is best suited for lighter-use applications such as breakfast bars, islands, and bar tops rather than heavy-use primary cooking surfaces. At Mohs 3-4, onyx is softer than granite or quartzite and is sensitive to acids (lemon juice, vinegar, wine), so it requires committed care. Many of our clients pair an onyx feature surface with a more durable stone for their primary food preparation area.
What does backlit onyx look like?
Backlit onyx is one of the most spectacular effects achievable with any natural material. LED panels positioned behind the slab illuminate the stone from within, revealing its internal banding structures and creating a luminous, glowing surface. The effect varies by colour — Green Onyx glows emerald, Honey Onyx radiates golden warmth, White Onyx becomes a wall of pure light, and Rainbow Onyx creates a kaleidoscope of illuminated earth tones. In2stone can design and install backlit onyx features for splashbacks, islands, feature walls, and more.
How much does onyx cost compared to other natural stones?
Onyx is positioned at the high-end to ultra-premium tier of natural stone pricing, generally more expensive than most marbles and comparable to the rarest quartzites. The cost reflects onyx's genuine rarity, the specialist quarrying and handling required, and the expert fabrication it demands. Within the onyx range, pricing varies significantly — more common varieties like Honey or Ivory Onyx are at the lower end, while exceptionally rare colours such as Sky Blue and Pink Onyx command the highest premiums.
How do you seal and maintain an onyx surface?
At installation, In2stone applies a professional-grade impregnating sealer that penetrates the stone's pores to create an invisible moisture barrier. We recommend resealing every six to twelve months depending on usage intensity. Daily care involves wiping with warm water and pH-neutral stone soap using a soft microfibre cloth, then drying thoroughly. Always use chopping boards, trivets for hot items, and blot any spills — especially acidic ones — immediately.
Where does onyx come from?
The onyx varieties available through In2stone are quarried across several countries, each producing distinctive colourways. Turkey produces many of the warm-toned varieties including Honey, Ivory, and White Onyx. Pakistan's Balochistan province is known for green onyx varieties and Rainbow Onyx. Iran supplies blue, pink, and gold varieties. Afghanistan produces rare Pink and Green Onyx from Helmand province. Mexico is famous for its warm, honey-toned "Mexican Onyx" from Puebla.
What applications is onyx best suited for?
Onyx excels in applications where its translucency and rarity create maximum visual impact. Bathroom vanity tops, backlit splashbacks, and feature walls are among the finest uses. Breakfast bars, home bar tops, reception desks, and fireplace surrounds are also excellent applications. For kitchens, we recommend onyx for lighter-use surfaces while pairing with a more durable stone for primary food preparation areas. The vertical applications — splashbacks and feature walls — are particularly spectacular because they avoid the wear issues of horizontal surfaces while showcasing the backlighting effect to its fullest.
Is every onyx slab unique?
Absolutely — no two onyx slabs are alike. The banding patterns, colour intensity, translucency levels, and mineral formations vary between every individual slab, even those cut from the same block. This is why In2stone encourages clients to view and select their specific slab in person whenever possible. What you see in photographs gives you the general character of each variety, but your individual slab will have its own unique personality. This natural uniqueness is one of onyx's greatest appeals — your surface is genuinely one of a kind.
