Interior Stone Cladding & Feature Walls

Few things transform a room quite like a wall of natural stone. Whether it's the translucent glow of backlit onyx behind a home bar, the mirrored drama of book-matched marble flanking a fireplace, or the quietly confident texture of dark ceramic panels in a hallway — stone cladding turns an ordinary wall into the centrepiece of your home.

Your Guide to Interior Stone Cladding & Feature Walls

More Than a Wall — It’s the Defining Moment of a Room

There are surfaces you walk past without thinking, and then there are surfaces that stop you in the doorway. A stone feature wall is the second kind. It’s the first thing guests notice, the detail they mention over dinner, the element that quietly lifts a home from nice to remarkable.

At In2stone, we’ve been crafting stone features for homeowners across Portsmouth, Hampshire and the surrounding area for over 25 years. Feature walls and interior cladding sit at the crossroads of Ian’s worldwide stone knowledge and the team’s precision fabrication — this is the kind of masonry that separates real stonemasons from suppliers who simply sell slabs. “The difference between a stonemason and just suppliers of worktops is huge,” as one customer put it. With feature walls, that difference becomes the entire point.

Choosing the Right Stone for Your Feature Wall

Every material tells a different story. The right choice depends on the atmosphere you want to create, the room’s purpose, and how adventurous you’d like to be.

Onyx — The Show-Stopper

Backlit onyx is, without question, our most popular feature wall material. Onyx is naturally translucent, so when panels are placed in front of LED lighting, the stone glows — warm ambers, honey tones, and milky whites rippled with natural veining. Behind a home bar, behind a headboard, beside a staircase — the effect is genuinely breathtaking. Ian has sourced onyx from quarries around the world, and his knowledge of which grades transmit light best is something you won’t find in a showroom brochure.

Best for: Home bars, entertaining areas, bedrooms, spa-inspired bathrooms, and anywhere you want an unforgettable focal point.

Marble — Drama and Elegance

Book-matched marble is the architect’s secret weapon. Two consecutive slabs are cut and opened like the pages of a book, creating a mirrored pattern of veining that’s unique to your home. The result is a wall that looks like a work of art — symmetrical, flowing, and irreplaceable. From dramatic dark grey Grigio Carnico to the warm goldens of Calacatta, marble makes a statement that never goes out of style.

Best for: Living room media walls, fireplace surrounds, dining room accent walls, and grand entrance hallways.

Granite — Strength and Character

Granite’s natural grain and depth of colour make it an excellent cladding material, particularly when you want texture without delicacy. Leathered or honed finishes add a tactile quality that polished stone can’t match, and granite’s extreme hardness means it handles life in busy households without complaint. Dark granites — charcoal, midnight blue, deep forest green — are particularly striking as feature panels.

Best for: Chimney breasts, hallway accent walls, feature panels in kitchens and living spaces where durability matters as much as looks.

Ceramic & Sintered Stone — The Modern Choice

Large-format ceramic and sintered stone panels have transformed what’s possible with interior cladding. At 6mm to 12mm thick, they’re significantly lighter than natural stone, making them ideal for walls where weight is a concern. They come in extraordinary stone-effect finishes — from carrara marble to dark slate — and they’re completely impervious to moisture, staining, and UV fading. Brands like Dekton, Neolith, and Sapien Stone offer panels large enough to cover an entire feature wall with just two or three pieces, almost eliminating visible joints.

Best for: Contemporary interiors, bathroom feature walls, kitchen accent walls, and any project where low maintenance and clean lines are priorities.

What We Create

Stone cladding covers a wide range of applications, and we tailor every project to the room, the stone, and the effect you’re after:

  • Feature walls — a single accent wall in a living room, bedroom, or dining space that transforms the entire room
  • Chimney breast cladding — stone panels wrapping the breast from floor to ceiling or dado level
  • Bar and entertaining areas — backlit onyx or dramatic marble behind a home bar
  • Media walls — book-matched stone flanking a recessed television
  • Bathroom feature panels — moisture-resistant stone or ceramic panels as a focal point behind a bath or vanity
  • Hallway and entrance accent walls — setting the tone from the moment visitors step inside

Each piece is precisely templated, fabricated in our workshop, and installed by the same team who measured your space. That continuity is how we guarantee the finish you see is the finish you imagined.

How We Work With Stone for Feature Walls

Feature wall projects are different from worktop installations. The panels are larger, the tolerances are tighter, and the aesthetic stakes are higher — every join, every edge, every alignment is on full display.

Ian and the team approach these projects with real mastery. Book-matching requires careful selection at the slab stage to ensure the veining aligns. Backlit onyx demands precisely controlled thicknesses so the light passes through evenly. Large ceramic panels need diamond-edge cutting to achieve seamless butt joints. All of this happens in our workshop before anything arrives at your home.

If you’re not sure which stone would work best, we invite you to visit our showroom in Portsmouth. We keep samples of marble, onyx, granite, and large-format ceramics on display, and Ian or Sam can walk you through the options for your specific room.

Care and Maintenance

Feature walls are low-traffic surfaces — they’re admired, not scrubbed — so maintenance is minimal:

  • Marble — dust with a soft cloth and use a pH-neutral stone cleaner. Seal annually with an impregnating sealer to maintain the surface.
  • Onyx — handle with the same care as marble. Avoid acidic cleaners. When backlit, the stone does all the work — just keep it dust-free.
  • Granite — virtually maintenance-free. Wipe with a damp cloth. No sealing required for most honed or leathered finishes.
  • Ceramic & sintered stone — the most resilient option. Clean with any standard household cleaner. No sealing, no special treatment.

Frequently Asked

Interior Stone Cladding & Feature Walls Questions

What materials work best for interior stone cladding and feature walls?
Porcelain and sintered stone are the standout choices for interior cladding because they can be produced in ultra-thin formats — as slim as 6mm — which dramatically reduces weight while maintaining structural integrity. Large-format slabs from brands like Neolith and Dekton deliver seamless, grout-free surfaces that transform a living room or hallway into something genuinely striking. Natural stone options like marble, travertine, and slate bring organic texture and depth that engineered materials cannot fully replicate, though they require slightly more care. We assess each project individually, factoring in wall structure, moisture exposure, and your aesthetic goals before recommending the ideal material.
Can stone cladding be applied to existing plaster walls?
In most domestic situations, yes — but the wall must be assessed for structural adequacy first. Thin-format porcelain and sintered stone slabs (6–12mm) are light enough to be adhered directly to sound plaster or plasterboard using specialist flexible adhesives, provided the substrate is flat, dry, and stable. Heavier natural stone may require mechanical fixings or a reinforced backing board. Our surveyor checks the wall condition during the templating visit and will advise honestly if any preparation work is needed before installation begins.
How much does a stone feature wall typically cost?
Costs vary significantly depending on the material chosen and the complexity of the installation. A simple porcelain feature wall in a standard living room might start from around £2,000–£3,000 including supply and fitting, while a full-height Calacatta marble fireplace surround with bookmatched veining could reach £8,000 or more. The key variables are slab material, total area, number of cutouts (for sockets, switches, or alcoves), and edge finishing. We provide detailed, itemised quotations after the survey so there are no surprises.
Is stone cladding suitable for bathroom walls?
Stone cladding is an exceptional choice for bathroom environments, particularly around baths, showers, and vanity areas. Non-porous materials like porcelain and sintered stone are completely waterproof without any sealant, will never harbour mould, and create a luxurious, grout-free surface that is dramatically easier to clean than traditional tiling. Natural stone like marble works beautifully in bathrooms too — countless luxury hotels prove the point — though it benefits from periodic resealing. The large-format slab approach eliminates the grout lines where moisture and bacteria tend to accumulate in conventional tile installations.
Can you bookmatch stone slabs for a feature wall?
Bookmatching is one of the most visually dramatic techniques available for feature walls. Two consecutive slabs are cut from the same block and opened like the pages of a book, creating a mirror-image pattern across the joint. The effect is particularly stunning with heavily veined marbles like Calacatta or Arabescato, where the symmetrical veining creates an almost architectural artwork. We source bookmatched pairs directly from the quarry or slab yard, and our fabrication team aligns the slabs with millimetre precision during installation. It is worth requesting bookmatched pairs early, as availability of well-matched slabs can be limited.
How are large stone slabs transported and installed on walls?
Large-format slab installation is a specialist operation that requires experienced fabricators and purpose-built equipment. Our team uses vacuum lifters, A-frame trolleys, and custom jigs to transport slabs safely into position without risk of damage. For wall-mounted installations, we use a combination of structural adhesive and concealed mechanical fixings, ensuring the slab is permanently secure. The templating visit captures every dimension — including socket positions, light switch locations, and any architectural details — so the slab arrives pre-cut and ready to fit with minimal on-site fabrication.
Does stone cladding add value to a property?
A well-executed stone feature wall is one of the most effective interior upgrades for perceived property value. Estate agents consistently report that premium stone finishes in kitchens, bathrooms, and living spaces create a strong first impression that resonates with buyers. Unlike painted feature walls or wallpaper, natural and engineered stone cladding is permanent, maintenance-free, and ages gracefully — it will look as good in twenty years as the day it was installed. The investment is particularly effective in open-plan living areas where the feature wall becomes the focal point of the entire ground floor.
What finishes are available for stone cladding?
The range of surface finishes extends well beyond the standard polished look. Honed finishes deliver a smooth, matte surface with a contemporary sophistication that avoids the reflective glare of polished stone — ideal for living rooms and bedrooms. Leathered and brushed finishes add a subtle tactile texture that catches the light beautifully and conceals fingerprints. Split-face and textured natural stone creates dramatic shadow play and three-dimensional depth. Porcelain and sintered stone brands like Neolith offer speciality finishes including silk, riverwashed, and satin that mimic natural textures with remarkable accuracy. We hold samples of all major finishes in our showroom for you to compare.
