The Stone

See the natural beauty of Porto Branco up close — the surface texture, colour depth, and veining that make this granite unique.

Style:

Speckled Aggregate Polished

Brazilian dark granite from Minas Gerais with dense fragmented white-and-grey speckling on a deep charcoal base.

Porto Branco granite is quarried from the Minas Gerais state of Brazil — one of the country's most significant geological provinces and a powerhouse of the international natural stone trade. The slab presents a deep charcoal base approaching black, densely patterned with an intricate mix of fine to medium-sized irregular fragments and speckles in light grey, cool white, and slightly darker grey tones. The texture is highly fragmented and busy, creating a random movement that spreads uniformly across the entire slab without any linear veining. The polished finish picks up small reflective highlights on the lighter particles, adding sparkle to the dark matrix.

The aggregate-style character sets Porto Branco apart from simpler salt-and-pepper dark granites. The white and grey fragments are not just surface specks — they are visible mineral grains with substance and scale, giving the slab a chunky, geological texture that reads as bold rather than subtle. This is a stone that clearly communicates its igneous origins. Performance matches the visual confidence: Mohs 6–7 hardness, excellent heat resistance, very low porosity, and the structural density that comes from slow crystallisation deep within the Earth's crust.

In2Stone recommends Porto Branco for clients who want a dark worktop with more visual substance than a plain black or finely speckled stone. The contrast between the charcoal base and the white-grey fragments creates genuine drama without the complexity of veined exotics. It works confidently alongside white, grey, or timber cabinetry, and the bold, fragmented pattern is excellent at concealing everyday kitchen wear.

Frequently Asked

Questions About Porto Branco

What gives Porto Branco its chunky speckled appearance?
The white and grey fragments are visible mineral grains — primarily quartz and feldspar crystals — that formed during the granite's slow crystallisation deep underground. Their relatively large size compared to finely speckled granites creates the bold, aggregate-style texture that characterises Porto Branco.
Where is Minas Gerais in Brazil?
Minas Gerais is a large inland state in southeastern Brazil — its name translates to 'General Mines,' reflecting its long history of mineral extraction. The state sits on ancient geological formations that produce an extraordinary range of natural stones, from pale quartzes to dark granites, and is one of the world's most important sources of dimension stone.
How does Porto Branco compare to Star Galaxy or Black Pearl granite?
Porto Branco has bolder, more fragmented speckling than Star Galaxy (which features metallic flecks on a flat black base) and more contrast than Black Pearl (which has a subtler, finer speckle). If you want a dark granite where the mineral texture is a prominent design feature rather than a subtle detail, Porto Branco delivers more visual impact.
Is the busy pattern practical for kitchen use?
Very practical. The dense, fragmented pattern conceals everyday marks, crumbs, water spots, and minor wear extremely effectively. This is one of the advantages of choosing a boldly patterned dark granite — it stays looking good between cleaning sessions with minimal effort.
Does Porto Branco granite need sealing?
Yes — annual sealing with a quality impregnating stone sealer is recommended, as with all natural granite. The very low porosity of this dense, dark stone means it responds well to sealing and maintains excellent stain resistance. Daily care is simply warm water and a pH-neutral soap.
★★★★★
"We decided to get bespoke granite work tops for our new kitchen and have to say that we are over the moon with them. From the outset, Ian was very professional when selecting the stone, he listened to what we wanted, went through all of the possibilities that we could have for our worktops and went through the process in detail once we had made a decision. The templateing and fitting was carried out by an incredibly professional and helpful team run by Kev, who knew exactly what they were doing and just got on and made my kitchen look amazing. I would highly recommend In2stone for a helpful, knowledgeable and professional service from start to finish."
