Your Guide to Home Office Desks

Why Stone for a Home Office

There’s a particular pleasure in sitting down at a desk that feels considered. Not just a flat surface clamped to four legs, but something that has weight, character, and a presence in the room. Stone desk surfaces have grown steadily in popularity since people began taking their home offices more seriously — and it’s not hard to understand why.

Stone is inherently calm. There’s none of the flex you get from wood, none of the visual busyness of a heavily grained surface demanding your attention. A well-chosen stone desktop recedes tastefully into the room, giving your work — and your thoughts — room to breathe. At the same time, it makes an unmistakable statement about the quality of the space.

We’ve been crafting bespoke stone surfaces for homes across Portsmouth, Hampshire and the surrounding area for over 25 years. We measure and template every desk surface by hand, cut and fabricate in our workshop, and install it ourselves. No middlemen, no outsourcing — the same team from your first conversation to the day we leave your home.

Choosing Your Material

Quartz — Effortless, Every Day

For most home office desks, quartz is the natural choice. It’s completely non-porous, which means pens and ink, coffee, water, and anything else that finds its way onto a working desk simply wipe away. There’s no sealing, no periodic treatment, and no anxiety about staining. You just sit down and work.

The aesthetic range is remarkable. Dramatic calacatta veining for a desk that makes a real statement. Pale concrete effects for a calm, Scandinavian feel. Clean white or deep charcoal for a space that lets other design choices take centre stage. Brands like Silestone and Caesarstone offer hundreds of options — and our showroom in Portsmouth carries over 500 samples so you can see and feel each one under proper lighting before you decide.

For waterfall-edged desks — where the stone wraps gracefully down one or both sides — quartz is particularly well suited. Our craftsmen join the stone so precisely that the veining flows continuously from the desk surface to the side panel with barely a visible seam.

Granite — Natural Authority

If you want a desk that genuinely stops people in their tracks, granite is hard to look past. Every slab is unique — no two granite surfaces are the same. The combination of deep colour and natural crystal movement gives granite a depth and richness that engineered materials simply can’t replicate.

Dark granites like Black Pearl or Absolute Black carry a natural authority that suits a serious home office environment. They’re also extremely hard — among the most durable surfaces available — and naturally heat-resistant, which matters if laptops or devices spend long hours on the desk surface.

Granite does benefit from periodic sealing, roughly once a year, but this is a straightforward process and most of our customers consider it a small trade-off for a surface that’s genuinely one of a kind.

Sintered Stone — The Modern Workhorse

Sintered stone — produced by brands like Dekton and Neolith — is created under conditions that replicate the formation of natural stone, but in a fraction of the geological time. The result is a surface that’s effectively impervious: scratch-resistant, heat-resistant, UV-stable, and impossible to stain.

For home offices that see very heavy daily use — multiple monitors, constant activity, regular drinks at the desk — sintered stone is simply unmatched in its resilience. It also works beautifully in desks positioned near windows where sunlight is a factor; sintered stone won’t fade or discolour over time, keeping the surface looking exactly as it did on installation day.

Design Considerations

A stone desk surface isn’t just a flat piece of material — the details matter considerably.

  • Thickness — A 20mm profile looks clean and contemporary; 30mm gives the desk a more substantial, premium feel and works particularly well with a waterfall edge
  • Edge profile — A simple straight or pencil-round edge suits modern desks; a more decorative ogee or chamfer adds a classical refinement. This is the detail that guests tend to notice and remember
  • Cable management — We can incorporate precision cut-outs for cable tidies, monitor stands, or custom openings for any accessories you have planned. These are templated and cut in our workshop to exact dimensions
  • Integrated shelving — Stone shelves floating above or beside a desk create a beautifully unified look. Many clients pair their desk surface with matching stone window sills or alcove shelves for a fully considered result

Our Approach

Every stone desk surface we make is measured, fabricated, and installed by our own team. Ian or Sam will visit your home, understand exactly how you use the space, and help you choose the right material, colour, and finish for the way you work.

Once you’re happy with the specification, we hand-template the desk to ensure precision, then fabricate your surface in our workshop. Most home office desks are installed within 14 days of templating — and we leave the space clean, tidy, and exactly as we found it.

“Ian always answered the phone or called me back — and that was before we even decided to use him.” — Carly Rielly

If you know what you want, bring your measurements to our showroom and we’ll have a quote ready quickly. If you’re still deciding, come and handle the samples. There’s no substitute for holding stone in your hands.

Frequently Asked

Home Office Desks Questions

What stone materials work best for a home office desk surface?
Quartz is the most popular choice for home office desks because it's completely non-porous — coffee, ink, and everyday spills wipe away without staining, and it never needs sealing. Granite is a brilliant option if you want something truly unique, as no two slabs are alike, though it benefits from periodic resealing. Sintered stone from brands like Dekton is the most technically resilient choice, offering scratch resistance, heat resistance and UV stability — ideal for heavy-use desks or workstations near windows.
Can you make a stone desk surface to a custom size?
Yes — every desk surface we make is bespoke. We visit your home, take precise measurements and hand-template the space, then fabricate the stone in our workshop to your exact specifications. Whether it's a standard rectangular desk, an L-shaped corner workstation, or an irregular alcove fitting, we cut the surface to fit the space you have rather than the other way around.
How thick should a stone desk surface be?
The two most common profiles are 20mm and 30mm. A 20mm surface looks clean and contemporary — it suits most modern home office styles and is lighter for the supporting structure to carry. A 30mm surface has a more substantial, premium feel and is particularly effective with a waterfall edge where the stone wraps down the sides of the desk. We'll advise on which suits your specific design during the site visit.
Will a stone desk surface damage easily if I drop something heavy on it?
Stone is extremely durable under everyday conditions, but it can chip if a very heavy object is dropped onto it at a corner or edge with concentrated force. Edge profiles like a bullnose or chamfer are slightly more resilient than a sharp square edge in this regard. For high-traffic workstations, sintered stone is the most impact-resistant option available. In practice, the vast majority of our clients use their stone desks without any issues for many years.
How long does it take to get a stone desk installed?
Once you've chosen your material and we've completed the template visit, most stone desk surfaces are fabricated and installed within 10 to 14 days. We'll confirm the precise lead time when you book, as it can vary slightly depending on the material chosen and current workshop demand. For clients with a deadline in mind — a new office setup or a home renovation — we'll always do our best to accommodate.
Can you incorporate cable management cut-outs into a stone desktop?
Yes, absolutely. We can cut precisely positioned openings for cable grommets, power modules, monitor arm mounts, or any other accessories you plan to use. These are specified during the templating visit and cut to exact dimensions in our workshop — far more accurate than anything cut on-site. It's worth having a clear idea of your desk setup before we template so we can position the openings exactly where you need them.
Is a waterfall-edge stone desk a good idea for a home office?
A waterfall edge — where the stone continues vertically down one or both sides of the desk — creates a beautifully refined, architectural look. It works particularly well with quartz where the veining can be book-matched to flow continuously from the surface to the side panel. It does add cost compared to a standard desk top, but clients who go this route are consistently delighted with the result. It effectively transforms a functional worktop into a piece of furniture.
Do you supply stone desks or supply and install?
We supply and install — that's our core business. Our own team templates, fabricates and fits every surface we make. We don't outsource the installation or hand off to third parties. This matters because the quality of a stone desk installation depends entirely on the accuracy of the template and the care taken on the day. With our team, you get the same craftsmen throughout the entire process.
