The Stone

See the natural beauty of Nova Black up close — the surface texture, colour depth, and veining that make this granite unique.

South Indian dark granite with a fine uniform granular texture and subtle silvery flecks on a honed finish.

Nova Black granite comes from South India's Precambrian shield formations — geological structures among the oldest on the planet, producing some of the most consistent dark granites available to the international market. The slab presents a very dark charcoal base that reads almost off-black, with no veining or directional pattern. Instead, a uniform fine granular texture of consistently distributed tiny pale grey and silvery flecks covers the entire surface. What makes Nova Black distinctive is its finish — it appears honed rather than polished, carrying a subtle textured feel rather than high-gloss reflectivity.

The honed character gives Nova Black a contemporary, tactile quality that sets it apart from the many polished dark granites on the market. The absence of mirror-like reflectivity creates a softer visual presence, and the fine silvery flecks add just enough mineral detail to confirm this is genuine stone rather than an engineered product. Beneath the understated surface, the stone delivers granite's full performance credentials: Mohs 6–7 hardness, excellent heat resistance, very low porosity, and strong structural integrity for decades of kitchen use.

In2Stone recommends Nova Black for clients who want a dark, minimal worktop with a modern finish. The honed surface is highly practical — it shows fewer fingerprints and water spots than polished dark granite, making daily maintenance simpler. It pairs naturally with contemporary handleless cabinetry in white, pale grey, or timber, and works particularly well with matt black hardware for a cohesive dark-and-light scheme.

Frequently Asked

Questions About Nova Black

Is Nova Black granite polished or honed?
Nova Black has a honed or satin finish rather than a high-gloss polish. This gives it a softer, more contemporary appearance and a subtle textured feel. The honed finish is also practical — it shows fewer fingerprints, water spots, and everyday marks than a polished dark surface.
How dark is Nova Black granite?
Very dark — the charcoal base reads almost off-black. The fine silvery flecks are tiny and evenly distributed, providing mineral texture without significantly lightening the overall appearance. From a distance, it reads as a dark, solid surface; close up, the granular detail becomes visible.
Does honed granite need more sealing than polished?
Honed granite is slightly more porous than polished granite because the polishing process compresses the surface micropores. Annual sealing is recommended for honed granite — some fabricators suggest resealing every six to twelve months depending on usage intensity. A quality impregnating sealer provides excellent protection between applications.
Where in South India is Nova Black quarried?
Nova Black comes from the dark granite quarrying regions of South India, likely Karnataka or Tamil Nadu. These areas sit on Precambrian shield rock formations — some of the oldest geological structures on Earth — which produce exceptionally dense, fine-grained dark stones prized by the international stone trade.
What design schemes suit Nova Black granite?
Nova Black's minimal, contemporary character works best in modern kitchen designs — handleless cabinetry in white or pale grey, minimalist hardware in matt black or brushed stainless steel, and clean architectural lines. It also works in industrial-inspired schemes alongside concrete, steel, and exposed timber. Avoid heavily ornate or traditional settings where a polished stone might be more appropriate.
★★★★★
"We decided to get bespoke granite work tops for our new kitchen and have to say that we are over the moon with them. From the outset, Ian was very professional when selecting the stone, he listened to what we wanted, went through all of the possibilities that we could have for our worktops and went through the process in detail once we had made a decision. The templateing and fitting was carried out by an incredibly professional and helpful team run by Kev, who knew exactly what they were doing and just got on and made my kitchen look amazing. I would highly recommend In2stone for a helpful, knowledgeable and professional service from start to finish."
