Guide

Your Guide to Stone Shelving & Niches

Why Choose Stone Shelving?

Most shelving is an afterthought — a flat piece of wood screwed to a wall. Stone shelving is the opposite. It’s a deliberate design choice that adds weight, permanence, and character to any room. A single thick stone shelf above a fireplace or a set of floating quartz ledges in an alcove can completely change how a space feels.

Stone also brings practical advantages that timber and MDF simply can’t match. It’s waterproof, so it thrives in bathrooms and kitchens where moisture would warp or damage other materials. It doesn’t scratch, dent, or stain. And unlike painted wood that chips and yellows over time, stone looks as good in ten years as the day it was installed.

At In2stone, we’ve been crafting bespoke stone pieces for over 25 years. Every shelf we make is cut, profiled, and finished in our own workshop — the same team, the same precision, the same pride we bring to our worktops.

Where Stone Shelving Works Best

Bathroom Niches and Shower Recesses

Recessed stone niches are one of the smartest upgrades you can make in a bathroom. Set into the wall of a shower enclosure or above a bath, they provide waterproof storage without the clutter of freestanding caddies or the maintenance headaches of tiled shelving with grout lines.

We use porcelain, sintered stone, or quartz for bathroom niches — all completely non-porous, so water simply runs off and there’s nothing for mould or mildew to cling to. The stone can be colour-matched to your vanity top or shower walls for a seamless, spa-like finish.

Kitchen Display Shelves

A floating stone shelf above a window, beside a range cooker, or spanning an island creates functional display space with serious visual impact. Granite and quartz are our most popular choices for kitchen shelves — they handle the heat and moisture of a cooking environment without flinching, and they can be matched to your worktops for a cohesive design.

Living Room and Study Shelving

This is where stone shelving really becomes an architectural feature. Floating quartz or marble-effect shelves set into a feature wall or alcove transform an ordinary room into something genuinely impressive. They’re particularly striking against dark painted walls, where the contrast draws the eye and creates depth.

For home libraries and studies, stone shelves offer a weight and solidity that complements books and art objects beautifully. There’s something about the permanence of stone that makes displayed items feel more considered and curated.

Fireplace Mantels and Hearth Shelves

A stone mantelpiece is one of the most impactful upgrades to any living room. Whether it’s a thick slab of polished granite spanning a modern fire recess or a delicate marble shelf above a traditional surround, stone immediately elevates the fireplace from functional to focal.

Materials for Stone Shelving

Quartz

Non-porous, consistent, and available in hundreds of colours and patterns. Quartz is our most popular choice for interior shelving — it’s maintenance-free, won’t stain, and can be cut to virtually any size. Marble-effect quartz is especially popular for living room and bathroom shelves, delivering the look of natural marble without the upkeep.

Granite

Naturally hard, heat-resistant, and full of character. Every granite slab is unique, making it ideal if you want shelving with genuine natural beauty. Polished granite reflects light beautifully, while honed or leathered finishes offer a more tactile, contemporary look.

Sintered Stone

Ultra-thin, UV-resistant, and virtually indestructible. Sintered stone like Dekton and Neolith can be cut into slim, elegant shelves that look incredibly refined. It’s particularly suited to bathrooms and outdoor shelving where moisture, heat, and sunlight exposure are concerns.

Edge Profiles for Shelving

The edge profile you choose changes the entire character of a stone shelf. A simple straight or pencil-round edge keeps things clean and modern. A bullnose softens the look and adds substance. For something more decorative, an ogee or chamfer edge brings a traditional elegance — and it’s one of those details that most fabricators can’t offer, but our stonemasons do every week.

Frequently Asked

Stone Shelving & Niches Questions

What types of stone can be used for shelving?
We can make shelves from any of the materials we work with — quartz, granite, marble, sintered stone, and porcelain. Quartz is our most popular choice for interior shelving because it's non-porous, maintenance-free, and available in hundreds of colours. In bathrooms and wet areas, sintered stone and porcelain are excellent options as they're completely waterproof and UV-resistant.
How thick are stone shelves?
Most of our stone shelves are 20mm or 30mm thick. 20mm gives a sleek, refined look that works well for bathroom niches and narrow display shelves. 30mm provides more visual weight and substance — ideal for living room floating shelves and kitchen display ledges. In some cases, we can mitre two pieces together to create the appearance of a thicker slab, typically 40mm or 60mm, for a more dramatic, chunky look.
Can stone shelves hold heavy items like books?
Absolutely. Stone is incredibly strong — a properly supported quartz or granite shelf can hold far more weight than a timber equivalent. The key is in the installation: we use concealed heavy-duty steel brackets or build shelves into alcove walls with full support underneath. For freestanding or floating shelves, we'll calculate the load capacity based on the span, thickness, and intended use to ensure everything is safe and solid.
How much do stone shelves cost?
The cost depends on the material, dimensions, edge profile, and number of shelves. As a guide, a single quartz floating shelf is significantly less expensive than most people expect — often comparable to bespoke timber shelving from a joiner. We provide fully inclusive quotes covering the stone, fabrication, and installation so there are no surprises. Visit our showroom or send us your dimensions for a quick estimate.
Can you match my shelves to my worktops?
Yes — this is one of the great advantages of choosing stone shelving from the same fabricator who makes your worktops. We can cut your shelves from the same slab or the same product range, ensuring a perfect colour and pattern match. Matching kitchen display shelves to your worktops creates a cohesive, designer look that ties the whole room together.
Are stone shelves suitable for bathrooms and wet rooms?
Stone shelving is one of the best materials you can use in wet environments. Quartz, sintered stone, and porcelain are all completely non-porous, meaning water can't penetrate the surface and there's nothing for mould or mildew to cling to. Recessed stone niches in shower walls are a particularly popular choice — they replace flimsy caddies and tiled shelves that trap moisture in grout lines.
How long does it take to make and install stone shelves?
Our standard turnaround is 14 days from confirmed measurements to installation. The shelves are cut and finished in our own workshop using precision CNC machinery and then hand-polished by our stonemasons. Installation is typically completed in a single visit, and we take care of everything from start to finish.
What edge profiles are available for stone shelving?
We offer the same range of edge profiles for shelving as we do for worktops — including straight, pencil round, bullnose, chamfer, and ogee. The edge profile you choose makes a surprising difference to the overall look: a simple straight edge keeps things modern and minimal, a bullnose adds warmth and softness, and an ogee brings a more traditional, decorative quality. You can see and feel all the options in our Portsmouth showroom.
