The Stone

See the natural beauty of Pretoria Black up close — the surface texture, colour depth, and veining that make this granite unique.

Style:

Veined Natural Polished

South African granite from Rustenburg with bold swirling silver-grey veining across a rich black base.

Pretoria Black granite originates from the Rustenburg area of South Africa's Northwest Province — the same geological region that produces the internationally renowned Impala series. The slab presents a deep charcoal grey to rich black base, extensively patterned with a dense swirling and undulating network of veining in mid-grey to silvery-white. These lighter veins often coalesce into broader amorphous patches with a distinct granular or crystalline texture, creating a surface with varied visual depth and bold, dynamic movement across the entire slab.

What distinguishes Pretoria Black from the simpler dark granites quarried in the same region is the sheer intensity of its veining. Where stones like Impala Black rely on subtle speckling, Pretoria Black goes further — the silver-grey veining creates a dramatic, figured surface that has genuine visual presence. The Rustenburg quarries sit on the western limb of the Bushveld Igneous Complex, one of the largest layered igneous intrusions on Earth, and the specific geological conditions there produce dark stones with remarkable mineral diversity. The polished finish brings out every tonal shift, and the crystalline texture within the lighter veins confirms the stone's deep igneous heritage.

In2Stone recommends Pretoria Black for clients who want a dark granite with far more character than a plain black or subtly speckled stone. The bold silver-grey veining creates a contemporary, architectural quality that works particularly well in modern and industrial-inspired kitchens. Pair with clean white cabinetry for maximum contrast, or with concrete and steel finishes for a cohesive industrial palette.

Frequently Asked

Questions About Pretoria Black

Where is Pretoria Black granite quarried?
Despite its name, Pretoria Black comes from the Rustenburg area of Northwest Province, South Africa — not from Pretoria itself. The Rustenburg quarries sit on the western limb of the Bushveld Igneous Complex, one of the largest layered igneous intrusions on Earth, which produces a range of dark granites and gabbros with varying degrees of mineral patterning.
How does Pretoria Black differ from Impala Black?
Both come from the same geological region, but they have distinctly different visual characters. Impala Black has a uniform, fine salt-and-pepper speckling with minimal movement. Pretoria Black has bold, sweeping silver-grey veining that creates a much more dramatic, figured surface. Choose Impala Black for understated consistency; Pretoria Black for architectural drama.
Is the silver-grey veining consistent across the slab?
The veining creates varied visual depth — some areas may have denser silver-grey patches while others show more of the dark base. This variation is part of the stone's character and ensures the surface never appears flat or monotonous. Personal slab selection allows you to choose the specific balance of dark base and lighter veining.
What design styles suit Pretoria Black granite?
Pretoria Black's bold, figured character works particularly well in contemporary, architectural, and industrial-inspired kitchens. Clean white or pale grey handleless cabinetry maximises the contrast. It also works alongside concrete, steel, and matt black finishes for a cohesive urban palette. Avoid heavily ornate traditional settings where a calmer stone might be more appropriate.
Does Pretoria Black need different maintenance from other granites?
No — standard granite maintenance applies. Annual sealing with a quality impregnating stone sealer, daily cleaning with warm water and pH-neutral soap, and prompt blotting of spills. The dark base colour is practical for daily use, and the bold veining breaks up fingerprints and water marks visually.
★★★★★
"We decided to get bespoke granite work tops for our new kitchen and have to say that we are over the moon with them. From the outset, Ian was very professional when selecting the stone, he listened to what we wanted, went through all of the possibilities that we could have for our worktops and went through the process in detail once we had made a decision. The templateing and fitting was carried out by an incredibly professional and helpful team run by Kev, who knew exactly what they were doing and just got on and made my kitchen look amazing. I would highly recommend In2stone for a helpful, knowledgeable and professional service from start to finish."
