Dramatic Dark Spiral

Polished black granite treads with subtle silver veining curve upward through a double-height stairwell. Recessed LED strips beneath each step cast warm light against the dark plaster walls, creating a moody, sculptural centrepiece that draws the eye the moment you walk through the front door.

Bright Marble Flight

02 // Marble

Bright Marble Flight

Full calacatta marble treads and risers flow seamlessly up a wide straight staircase, their dramatic grey veining uninterrupted from base to landing. A frameless glass balustrade and overhead pendant keep the space feeling light and airy — classic elegance reimagined for contemporary living.

Floating Cantilevered Treads

03 // Sintered Stone

Floating Cantilevered Treads

Individual sintered stone treads extend from the wall without visible support, creating a gravity-defying effect that feels impossibly sleek. The stone's natural texture and depth contrast with polished plaster walls, while hidden structural steel handles the engineering beneath the surface.

Your Guide to Stone Staircases

Why Choose a Stone Staircase?

A staircase is one of the first things anyone sees when they step through your front door. It’s not a surface hidden behind cupboard doors or tucked into a corner — it’s architecture, front and centre. And when that architecture is crafted from stone, the effect is transformative.

Stone stairs have been a hallmark of grand buildings for centuries, from palazzo marble flights to Edinburgh granite tenements. What’s changed is how we use them in modern homes. Contemporary stone staircases are lighter, more sculptural, and more varied in material than ever before. Floating treads cantilevered from a wall. Spirals carved from a single stone type, each tread precision-cut by CNC. Full stone flights with matching risers that flow from hallway to landing like liquid rock.

At In2stone, we’ve been crafting bespoke stone features for homes across Portsmouth, Hampshire and the surrounding area for over 25 years. Stone staircases are among the most rewarding projects we work on — they’re structurally demanding, visually dramatic, and genuinely unique to each home. No two are alike.

Choosing the Right Stone

Granite — The Natural Choice for Heavy Traffic

If your staircase is going to be used by a family every day — children, dogs, bags, shoes — granite is the strongest option available. Its exceptional hardness means it resists scratching, chipping, and wear in ways that softer stones simply can’t match. Dark granites like Absolute Black or Star Galaxy deliver a moody, contemporary feel, while lighter shades like Kashmir White bring warmth and brightness to a hallway.

Best for: Family homes, high-traffic staircases, and anyone who values durability above all else.

Marble — Timeless Elegance

There’s a reason marble staircases have defined grand architecture for millennia. The depth of veining, the warmth of touch, the way light plays across a polished surface — marble creates an emotional response that no other material can replicate. Calacatta and Carrara are the classic choices, but darker marbles like Nero Marquina offer a striking modern alternative.

Marble is softer than granite and will develop a gentle patina over time. Many homeowners find this ageing process beautiful — it gives the stone character and warmth. For those who prefer a pristine finish, we recommend sealing the surface and using marble on lower-traffic staircases or in combination with a runner.

Best for: Grand entrances, period homes, feature staircases, and homeowners who appreciate the living quality of natural stone.

Sintered Stone — Engineered Precision

Brands like Dekton and Neolith produce ultra-compact surfaces that combine the beauty of natural stone with engineered durability. They’re virtually scratch-proof, stain-proof, and UV-resistant — making them an excellent choice for staircases that receive direct sunlight through landing windows.

Sintered stone comes in large formats that suit contemporary floating tread designs. The material is consistent in thickness and appearance, which matters when you’re creating a series of identical cantilevered steps that need to look perfectly uniform.

Best for: Contemporary floating designs, south-facing staircases, and projects where absolute consistency between treads matters.

Porcelain — Design Versatility

Large-format porcelain slabs offer an extraordinary range of finishes — from marble reproductions to concrete effects and raw stone textures — at a competitive price point. Thinner formats keep weight manageable, which is particularly important for floating tread designs where the structural steel needs to handle the load.

Best for: Budget-conscious projects, lightweight floating designs, and homeowners who want a wide range of aesthetic options.

Design Possibilities

Floating Cantilevered Treads

Individual stone treads anchored into the wall with hidden structural steel, creating the illusion that each step hovers in mid-air. This is the most architecturally dramatic staircase design — minimal, sculptural, and unmistakably modern. The key is precision: every tread must be cut to identical dimensions and installed at exactly the right angle.

Full Stone Flights

Treads and risers all in stone, with each piece bookmatched or grain-matched to create a continuous flow of material from bottom to top. This classic approach delivers the full impact of natural stone — you see the veining, the colour variation, the depth — across the entire staircase.

Spiral and Curved Staircases

Curved stone stairs are among the most technically challenging and visually rewarding projects in stonemasonry. Each tread is individually templated and cut to follow the precise curve of the stairwell. The result is a truly sculptural piece — a functional work of art that transforms the entire character of a hallway.

Stone Cladding over Existing Stairs

If a complete rebuild isn’t practical, we can clad existing timber or concrete staircases with stone treads and risers. This is a cost-effective route to a stone staircase that still delivers the full visual impact. The existing structure provides the support; the stone provides the beauty.

The Craftsmanship Behind Stone Stairs

Precision Templating

Every stone staircase starts with hand templating. Unlike flat worktops, stairs involve multiple planes, angles, and junctions that must align perfectly across every tread and riser. Our templaters measure each step individually, accounting for the inevitable variations that exist in even the most carefully built stairwell.

CNC Cutting and Hand Finishing

Treads are cut on our CNC machine for dimensional accuracy, then hand-finished for the edges and nosing profiles. Bullnose, pencil round, square — the edge profile subtly changes the character of the entire staircase, and we’ll help you choose the right one.

Structural Collaboration

For cantilevered and floating designs, we work closely with your builder or structural engineer to ensure the wall or support structure can handle the loads. Stone is heavy, and the fixings need to be exactly right. This is one of the areas where our experience with bespoke masonry really matters — we understand the engineering as well as the aesthetics.

Frequently Asked

Stone Staircases Questions

What types of stone staircase projects does In2stone undertake?
We fabricate and install stone elements for the full spectrum of staircase designs — from complete solid stone treads and risers to stone cladding over existing concrete or timber structures. Full stone staircases in marble, granite, or limestone create breathtaking architectural statements in entrance halls and reception areas. Stone cladding is a more cost-effective approach that transforms an existing staircase with a layer of precision-cut stone over the existing structure. We also produce stone landing platforms, skirting, balustrade caps, and newel post finishes to complement the stair treads and create a fully cohesive design.
Which stone materials are best suited for staircase treads?
Durability and slip resistance are the primary considerations for staircase treads. Granite is the workhorse material — exceptionally hard-wearing, available in honed and textured finishes for excellent grip, and virtually indestructible under foot traffic. Marble is the classic choice for grand entrance staircases and has been used in prestigious buildings for millennia, though it benefits from a honed or brushed finish to improve traction. Slate offers natural slip resistance due to its inherent texture. Porcelain and sintered stone deliver outstanding performance in both residential and commercial settings, with the added advantage of consistent colouring across large batches.
How do you ensure stone staircase treads are not slippery?
Slip resistance is engineered into every staircase project through careful material and finish selection. Honed finishes provide a smooth but non-reflective surface with significantly better grip than polished stone. Brushed, leathered, and flamed finishes create subtle surface texture that dramatically increases traction, particularly on granite and slate. For commercial projects or staircases subject to building regulation requirements, we can apply anti-slip strips or channels machined into the tread nosing. The combination of appropriate material selection and finish specification ensures every staircase we install meets or exceeds relevant safety standards.
Can stone be used to clad an existing timber or concrete staircase?
Stone cladding over existing structures is one of our most popular staircase applications. For concrete staircases — common in apartment buildings and commercial properties — we fabricate thin stone tiles (typically 10–20mm) that adhere directly to the concrete surface using flexible adhesive. Timber staircases can also be clad, though they typically require a stable substrate layer to be installed first to prevent any flex in the wood from cracking the stone. The cladding approach delivers the visual impact of a solid stone staircase at a fraction of the weight and cost, making it accessible for a much wider range of properties.
What edge profiles are available for staircase treads?
The nosing profile — the front edge of each tread — is both a design and safety consideration. A bullnose profile creates a generous curved edge that is comfortable underfoot and visually softens each step. A pencil-round edge provides a more contemporary, minimal line. A square edge with a small chamfer delivers a sharp, architectural look favoured in modern and minimalist interiors. For safety-critical applications, a stepped or rebated nosing creates a defined edge that is easy to see and provides additional grip. We can also incorporate contrasting stone inserts at the tread nosing for visually impaired accessibility compliance.
How long does a stone staircase installation typically take?
The timeline depends on the complexity of the project. A straightforward cladding of a standard straight-flight staircase (12–14 treads) typically takes two to three days of installation once the stone has been fabricated. Curved or helical staircases require more intricate templating and fabrication, and the installation may extend to five to seven days. The fabrication period in our workshop — between templating and installation — is usually three to four weeks, during which every tread, riser, and landing piece is cut, shaped, and finished to the precise dimensions captured during the survey.
Does a stone staircase require structural reinforcement?
For stone cladding over an existing solid structure (concrete or steel), additional structural reinforcement is rarely necessary — the stone adds relatively modest weight to an already load-bearing framework. For freestanding solid stone staircases, the structural requirements are more significant and must be assessed by a structural engineer. We work closely with architects and engineers on these projects to ensure the supporting structure can bear the concentrated loads at each tread support point. During the initial consultation, we assess the existing structure and advise honestly on whether any preparatory work is needed before fabrication begins.
Can you match staircase stone to existing flooring or worktops in the home?
Material continuity between floors, staircases, and worktops creates a powerful sense of design coherence throughout a home. If your hallway flooring is a particular marble or your kitchen worktops are a specific granite, we can source the same material for your staircase treads. Where an exact batch match is important — particularly with heavily veined natural stones — we recommend planning multi-area projects together so we can reserve sufficient material from a single block. Even if the staircase stone differs from other surfaces, we ensure the colour palette and finish complement the existing scheme for a harmonious overall design.
