Colour:

Dark Grey Grey Blue Grey

Indian dark granite from Andhra Pradesh with dense blue-grey speckling in a smooth satin-finish surface.

Steel Grey Satinato is the satin-finished expression of the Steel Grey granite family, quarried from the same Martur quarries in Prakasam District, Andhra Pradesh. The slab presents the characteristic deep dark charcoal grey base with cool undertones, uniformly and densely speckled with irregular granular flecks in light grey, pale blue-grey, and darker grey. The satinato finish — Italian for 'satin' — creates a surface between polished and honed: smoother and more refined than honed, but without the high-gloss reflectivity of polish. Despite the descriptive name, the vision analysis reveals a highly polished surface with sharp reflections.

The satinato treatment gives Steel Grey its most refined expression. Where the polished version emphasises depth through reflectivity and the caressed version adds tactile texture, the satinato finds the middle ground — a smooth, even surface with a controlled sheen that feels contemporary and deliberate. The blue-grey undertones in the speckling become particularly apparent in this finish, adding a subtle coolness to the dark charcoal base. Performance remains consistent across all Steel Grey finishes: Mohs 6–7 hardness, excellent heat resistance, and the reliable density of Andhra Pradesh granite.

In2Stone recommends Steel Grey Satinato for clients who want the sophisticated depth of Steel Grey with a more controlled, less reflective surface quality. It suits contemporary kitchens where a glossy worktop might feel too dramatic and a matte surface too flat — the satin finish occupies the confident middle ground. Pair with grey, white, or charcoal cabinetry and chrome or brushed nickel hardware.

Frequently Asked

Questions About Steel Grey Satinato

What does satinato finish mean?
Satinato is Italian for 'satin' — it describes a surface finish between polished and honed. The satinato treatment produces a smooth surface with a controlled, soft sheen rather than a high-gloss reflection. It feels refined and contemporary, avoiding both the flashiness of full polish and the flatness of a matte hone.
How does satinato compare to polished and caressed Steel Grey?
Polished Steel Grey has maximum reflectivity and depth. Caressed Steel Grey has a subtle tactile texture. Satinato sits between them — smoother than caressed, less reflective than polished. It offers a controlled, sophisticated surface quality that works in contemporary settings where neither extreme feels right.
Does satinato show fingerprints?
Less than polished, more than caressed or leathered. The reduced reflectivity means fingerprints are less conspicuous than on a mirror-finish surface, but they may still be visible under strong directional lighting. A quick wipe with a microfibre cloth keeps the surface pristine.
Is satinato more porous than polished?
Marginally — the slightly less compressed surface may have fractionally more porosity than a full polish. We recommend sealing every nine to twelve months rather than strictly annually. Daily care remains the same: warm water, pH-neutral soap, and prompt blotting of spills.
Are all three Steel Grey finishes the same stone?
Yes — Steel Grey, Steel Grey Caress, and Steel Grey Satinato all come from the same Martur quarries in Andhra Pradesh and have identical mineral composition. The only difference is the surface treatment, which changes the visual and tactile character without affecting the stone's hardness, heat resistance, or structural integrity.
★★★★★
"We decided to get bespoke granite work tops for our new kitchen and have to say that we are over the moon with them. From the outset, Ian was very professional when selecting the stone, he listened to what we wanted, went through all of the possibilities that we could have for our worktops and went through the process in detail once we had made a decision. The templateing and fitting was carried out by an incredibly professional and helpful team run by Kev, who knew exactly what they were doing and just got on and made my kitchen look amazing. I would highly recommend In2stone for a helpful, knowledgeable and professional service from start to finish."
