The Stone

See the natural beauty of Tarn Royal up close — the surface texture, colour depth, and veining that make this granite unique.

Style:

Speckled Natural Polished

French granite from the Sidobre massif in Tarn with cool dark-grey speckling in a classic European tradition.

Tarn Royal granite comes from the Sidobre massif near Lac Haut in the Tarn department of southern France — making it one of the very few French granites in the In2Stone collection. The Sidobre is the largest granite massif in Europe, and the stone quarried there has been used in French architecture and infrastructure for centuries. The slab presents a cool dark grey base with a densely speckled pattern of fine to medium-sized granular particles in charcoal black, light grey, and off-white. There is no veining and no directional movement — just a uniformly busy random speckling that is consistently robust across the entire surface.

The significance of Tarn Royal lies as much in its provenance as its appearance. French granite from the Sidobre carries a heritage that few stones can match — the massif has been quarried since at least the Middle Ages, and its stone has been used in everything from Parisian paving to cathedral construction. Tarn Royal brings that European pedigree to a kitchen worktop, with the kind of structural integrity that only ancient geological formations can provide. The dense granular composition delivers Mohs 6–7 hardness, excellent heat resistance, and very low porosity — standard granite performance from an exceptional source.

In2Stone recommends Tarn Royal for clients who value European provenance and understated quality. The cool dark grey palette is classically versatile — it works with white, grey, timber, and dark cabinetry across traditional, transitional, and contemporary kitchen styles. For Francophile clients or those who simply want a stone with genuine European heritage, Tarn Royal delivers quiet distinction.

Frequently Asked

Questions About Tarn Royal

Where is the Sidobre?
The Sidobre is a granite massif in the Tarn department of southern France, part of the Massif Central. It is the largest granite massif in Europe, covering approximately 120 square kilometres. The area has been quarried for centuries and remains one of France's most important stone-producing regions.
Is French granite different from Indian or Brazilian granite?
The geological formation context differs — Sidobre granites are Hercynian in origin, approximately 300 million years old. The resulting stone tends to be exceptionally consistent and structurally sound. The quality difference is about the specific stone rather than the country of origin, but European granites carry particular heritage significance.
How does Tarn Royal compare to Steel Grey?
Both are cool dark grey speckled granites, but from completely different geological origins. Steel Grey comes from India and has larger crystalline inclusions with blue-grey undertones. Tarn Royal is French with a finer, more uniform speckling. Choose based on your preference for European provenance versus mineral detail.
Is Tarn Royal suitable for traditional kitchens?
Excellent choice. The classic European character and understated cool grey palette suit traditional and period kitchens beautifully. It complements painted timber cabinetry, period hardware, and classic architectural details while providing all of granite's practical performance benefits.
Does Tarn Royal require special maintenance?
No — standard granite maintenance applies. Annual sealing, daily cleaning with warm water and pH-neutral soap. The fine, uniform speckling and dark base make it practical and forgiving for daily kitchen use.
★★★★★
"We decided to get bespoke granite work tops for our new kitchen and have to say that we are over the moon with them. From the outset, Ian was very professional when selecting the stone, he listened to what we wanted, went through all of the possibilities that we could have for our worktops and went through the process in detail once we had made a decision. The templateing and fitting was carried out by an incredibly professional and helpful team run by Kev, who knew exactly what they were doing and just got on and made my kitchen look amazing. I would highly recommend In2stone for a helpful, knowledgeable and professional service from start to finish."
