Style:

Speckled Polished Fine Grain

Polished South African gabbro from Rustenburg — deep charcoal grains glitter with captured light.

Impala D granite is a premium-grade selection from the vast Rustenburg Bushveld Complex in South Africa's Northwest Province. The slab presents a very dark charcoal base, almost black, carrying subtle deep blue-grey undertones that reveal themselves in changing light. Across this dark foundation, a dense and uniform distribution of fine to medium-sized granular flecks creates a quietly energetic surface — predominantly deep grey and black mineral grains, some catching the light with a distinct sparkle that brings the polished surface to life.

This is a gabbro-classification stone, formed from slow-cooling mafic magma rich in pyroxene and plagioclase. That geological pedigree gives Impala D an exceptionally tight mineral structure — very low porosity, a Mohs hardness of 6–7, and heat resistance forged in conditions far more extreme than any kitchen will produce. The polished finish maximises the depth of colour and the reflective quality of individual mineral grains, making each slab feel deeper than its 30mm thickness suggests.

In2Stone finds Impala D particularly effective in kitchens where dark worktops anchor the design. It pairs confidently with white or pale grey cabinetry for clean contrast, or sits comfortably alongside charcoal units and brushed brass handles for a rich, layered scheme. The fine granular pattern means it avoids the flat appearance of solid-colour engineered surfaces while maintaining the visual discipline that contemporary kitchens demand.

Frequently Asked

Questions About Impala D

What is the difference between Impala D and standard Impala Black granite?
Impala D is a higher-grade selection from the same Rustenburg quarry complex. It typically features a darker, more uniform base colour with finer mineral grain and fewer visible lighter inclusions than standard Impala Black. The 'D' designation refers to the specific block quality — expect deeper charcoal tones and a more consistent overall appearance.
Does the polished finish on Impala D show fingerprints?
The polished finish does show fingerprints and water spots more than honed or leathered alternatives, though the dark, busy mineral pattern helps disguise them compared to a plain black surface. For kitchens where daily marks are a concern, consider the Impala D Honed or Satinato variants instead.
Is Impala D granite suitable for outdoor kitchen worktops?
Yes — granite is naturally UV-stable and will not fade in sunlight. For outdoor use, we would recommend a leathered or flamed finish rather than polished, as these provide better grip when wet and hide weathering more effectively. Annual sealing is especially important in exposed outdoor settings.
Where exactly is Impala D granite quarried?
Impala D comes from the Rustenburg Bushveld Complex in South Africa's Northwest Province — one of the largest layered igneous intrusions on Earth. This region has been producing dark gabbro commercially for decades, and the Rustenburg quarries are known worldwide for their consistency and quality.
How often should Impala D granite be sealed?
We recommend sealing Impala D annually with a quality penetrating stone sealer. The process takes around 30 minutes and significantly improves stain resistance. Between sealings, clean daily with warm water and a pH-neutral soap — avoid acidic or alkaline cleaners which can degrade the seal over time.
★★★★★
"We decided to get bespoke granite work tops for our new kitchen and have to say that we are over the moon with them. From the outset, Ian was very professional when selecting the stone, he listened to what we wanted, went through all of the possibilities that we could have for our worktops and went through the process in detail once we had made a decision. The templateing and fitting was carried out by an incredibly professional and helpful team run by Kev, who knew exactly what they were doing and just got on and made my kitchen look amazing. I would highly recommend In2stone for a helpful, knowledgeable and professional service from start to finish."
