The Stone

See the natural beauty of Labrador Antique up close — the surface texture, colour depth, and veining that make this granite unique.

Norwegian larvikite from Larvik with deep brown tones and scattered iridescent teal-blue mineral flecks.

Labrador Antique is a Norwegian larvikite — a unique igneous rock quarried from the Larvik region of Vestfold county — that carries one of the most distinctive visual signatures in the natural stone world. The slab presents a deep warm brown base with subtle charcoal undertones, densely patterned with irregular specks of darker brown, black, and lighter reddish-brown mineral grains. Scattered throughout this earthy matrix are small, distinctive iridescent flecks of teal-blue and green — feldspar crystals exhibiting the optical phenomenon known as labradorescence, where light refracts within the mineral's internal structure to produce a fleeting, opalescent shimmer.

Larvikite is geologically distinct from true granite, formed from a syenite-family magma rich in alkali feldspar rather than quartz. This gives it a slightly different mineral character but equal or greater hardness, density, and durability. The Larvik quarries have been producing this stone commercially since the 19th century, and it remains one of Norway's most prized geological exports. The polished finish maximises the iridescent effect, catching light at different angles to reveal the hidden blue-green mineral fire within the stone.

In2Stone sees Labrador Antique as a stone for homeowners who appreciate subtlety with depth. From a distance it reads as a warm, rich brown — handsome and understated. But at close range, the iridescent flecks reveal themselves, adding a layer of visual intrigue that no engineered surface can replicate. It pairs naturally with dark timber, aged leather upholstery, and warm metallics like brushed copper or antique gold, creating a kitchen that feels grounded, masculine, and distinctly refined.

Frequently Asked

Questions About Labrador Antique

What causes the blue-green shimmer in Labrador Antique?
The iridescent flecks are caused by labradorescence — an optical phenomenon within the stone's feldspar crystals. Light enters the crystal, refracts between internal layers, and exits as a flash of colour, typically teal-blue or green. This effect is entirely natural and unique to certain feldspar-rich stones like larvikite.
Is Labrador Antique a true granite?
Commercially it is sold as granite, but geologically it is a larvikite — a type of monzonite or augite syenite. It belongs to the igneous rock family but has a different mineral composition to true granite, with more alkali feldspar and less quartz. Its kitchen performance — hardness, heat resistance, durability — is fully comparable to or better than true granite.
Does the iridescence fade over time?
No. The labradorescent effect is a structural property of the feldspar crystals, not a surface coating or pigment. It will not fade, wear away, or diminish over time. As long as the polished surface remains in good condition, the iridescent flecks will continue to catch light exactly as they do on the day of installation.
Where in Norway is Labrador Antique quarried?
Labrador Antique comes from the Larvik region of Vestfold county in southeastern Norway. The Larvik pluton — a geological formation stretching around 50 kilometres — has been commercially quarried since the 1880s and is the sole source of this distinctive larvikite. The stone is a protected Norwegian heritage material.
What kitchen colours complement Labrador Antique's warm brown tones?
Labrador Antique's deep brown palette works well with cream or ivory cabinetry for a classic, warm scheme. It also pairs handsomely with charcoal or deep navy units for a richer, more contemporary look. Avoid very cool whites or bright colours that would fight the stone's warmth — instead, lean into natural, earthy tones with hardware in brushed copper or antique brass.
★★★★★
"We decided to get bespoke granite work tops for our new kitchen and have to say that we are over the moon with them. From the outset, Ian was very professional when selecting the stone, he listened to what we wanted, went through all of the possibilities that we could have for our worktops and went through the process in detail once we had made a decision. The templateing and fitting was carried out by an incredibly professional and helpful team run by Kev, who knew exactly what they were doing and just got on and made my kitchen look amazing. I would highly recommend In2stone for a helpful, knowledgeable and professional service from start to finish."
