Beyond the Ordinary

Every worktop makes a choice about how much attention it wants. Plain surfaces defer quietly to the kitchen around them. Marble-effects make a sophisticated statement. Exotic surfaces do something altogether different — they stop you in your tracks. They make you walk closer, touch the surface, and ask “what is this?”

Exotic worktops are for people who view their kitchen as an extension of their personality. The homeowner who collects art. Who has travelled widely and has an eye for the unusual. Who sees a kitchen renovation not just as a functional upgrade but as an opportunity to create something they genuinely love looking at every day.

What Makes a Stone “Exotic”

Rarity

Many exotic stones come from single quarries, sometimes in remote locations. When that quarry is exhausted, the stone is gone forever. This rarity gives exotic surfaces a genuine exclusivity — your worktop may come from a source that will never be quarried again.

Colour

Exotic stones achieve colours that mainstream materials simply can’t. Electric blues, deep emerald greens, sunset oranges, violet purples — these are colours produced by rare mineral combinations under extreme geological conditions.

Translucency

Some exotic stones — particularly onyx and certain quartzites — are naturally translucent. When backlit, they glow from within, creating an effect that is genuinely breathtaking. A backlit onyx island is one of the most extraordinary design features any kitchen can have.

Exotic Stone Types

Quartzite

Natural quartzite should not be confused with quartz (an engineered material). Quartzite is a naturally occurring metamorphic rock formed when sandstone is subjected to extreme heat and pressure. The result is one of the hardest natural stones available, with veining and colour combinations that can be genuinely astonishing.

Onyx

Formed by the slow deposition of minerals from hot springs, onyx has a banded, translucent structure unlike any other stone. Honey onyx, green onyx, and blue onyx are all available and all extraordinary. Onyx is softer than granite or quartzite and requires more careful handling, but its visual impact compensates many times over.

Semi-Precious Stone

Surfaces incorporating slices of agate, amethyst, or tiger’s eye create worktops that cross the boundary between functional surface and fine art. These are premium products for truly exceptional installations.

Frequently Asked

Exotic Worktops Questions

What qualifies a stone as exotic in the worktop world?
Exotic stones are characterised by rare geological origins, extraordinary visual properties, or colours and patterns that fall outside conventional worktop aesthetics. These include translucent onyx varieties that glow when backlit, intensely coloured semi-precious stones like sodalite and tiger's eye, deeply figured quartzites with flowing mineral deposits, and unusual granites with iridescent labradorite crystals. What unites exotic stones is their rarity — they are quarried in limited quantities from specific geological deposits, often in remote locations, and no two slabs are ever identical. Choosing an exotic stone means owning a genuinely one-of-a-kind surface.
Which exotic stone materials does In2stone supply?
Our exotic range spans several extraordinary material categories. Translucent onyx — including Honey Onyx, Green Onyx, and White Onyx — delivers luminous, layered surfaces that can be dramatically backlit. Rare quartzites like Patagonia, Fusion, and Azul Macaubas feature sweeping mineral patterns in colours from turquoise to copper. Semi-precious stone surfaces incorporating agate, amethyst, tiger's eye, and sodalite create surfaces that are closer to gemstones than building materials. Exotic granites with large feldspar crystals, such as Labradorite and Spectrolite, produce iridescent surfaces that shift colour depending on viewing angle. We source these materials from specialist quarries and importers worldwide.
Are exotic stone worktops significantly more expensive?
Exotic stones typically sit at the premium end of the worktop market, reflecting their genuine geological rarity and the specialist handling they require. Semi-precious stone surfaces and rare onyx varieties can cost several times more per square metre than standard granite or quartz. However, not all exotic stones are prohibitively expensive — some unusual granites and quartzites are priced only modestly above mainstream alternatives. We always provide transparent pricing and can suggest exotic materials at various budget levels. Many clients choose to use exotic stone selectively — a backlit onyx splashback or a semi-precious island top — rather than covering every surface, managing cost while maximising visual impact.
Can exotic stone worktops be backlit?
Backlighting is one of the most spectacular techniques available for translucent exotic stones, particularly onyx and certain thin-cut quartzites. LED panels installed behind the stone slab illuminate the surface from within, revealing layers of colour, translucency, and mineral structure that are invisible under normal lighting. The effect transforms a worktop or splashback into a glowing, luminous artwork — particularly dramatic in evening lighting when the rest of the kitchen is dimmed. We work with specialist lighting suppliers to design backlighting systems that distribute light evenly across the entire slab surface, and the LED panels can be colour-tuned and dimmed to create different moods.
How durable are exotic stone surfaces for kitchen use?
Durability varies significantly across exotic stone types. Quartzite is exceptionally hard — harder than granite — and performs brilliantly as a kitchen worktop with excellent scratch and heat resistance. Granite varieties, including exotic options with labradorite crystals, are similarly robust. Onyx, however, is softer and more porous than other natural stones, requiring careful sealing and more attentive maintenance; it is best suited to lower-traffic areas like splashbacks, bar tops, and bathroom surfaces rather than heavy-use kitchen worktops. Semi-precious stone surfaces are typically set in resin backing for structural stability. We always advise honestly on which exotic materials are practical for your intended application.
Do exotic worktops work in contemporary kitchen designs?
Exotic stones create some of the most compelling contemporary kitchen installations we produce. The visual intensity of a backlit onyx island or a deeply figured quartzite splashback provides the singular design statement that contemporary interiors demand — one extraordinary element surrounded by deliberate simplicity. Dark, minimal cabinetry with matte finishes and concealed hardware provides the perfect neutral stage for exotic stone to command attention. The contrast between engineered architectural precision and raw geological drama is precisely what makes these installations so effective. Contemporary design celebrates materials that tell a story, and exotic stones tell the most extraordinary stories of all.
How do you select and approve an exotic stone slab?
Slab selection is a critical part of the exotic stone process because natural variation between slabs can be dramatic. We strongly recommend that clients view and approve the specific slab before fabrication begins — either at our supplier's slab yard or through high-resolution photographs with accurate colour calibration. For onyx and heavily figured quartzite, we photograph the slab with a measurement overlay so you can visualise exactly how the pattern will map across your worktop layout. Our team advises on optimal cutting positions to showcase the stone's best features and avoid any areas of weakness or inconsistency. This collaborative selection process ensures the finished installation exceeds your expectations.
What maintenance do exotic stone worktops require?
Maintenance requirements vary by material type. Exotic quartzite follows standard natural stone care — annual sealing with an impregnating sealer and routine cleaning with pH-neutral products. Exotic granite is similarly straightforward. Onyx requires more attentive care: seal every three to six months, avoid all acidic substances (including lemon juice and vinegar), and treat the surface gently. Semi-precious stone surfaces with resin backing are generally non-porous and require minimal maintenance, though direct heat should be avoided. We provide material-specific care guidance with every exotic stone installation, and our aftercare team is available for advice at any time.
