Exotic Sparkle Polished

Madagascan exotic from Ihosy with electric blue iridescence blazing from a dark petrol-toned matrix.

Lemurian Blue granite is one of the natural stone world's most visually extraordinary materials — a rare exotic quarried from the remote Ihosy district in Madagascar's Ihorombe Region. The slab presents a dark, complex background blending deep charcoal, muted black, and rich petrol blue-green tones, shot through with a dense, fractured pattern of interconnected dark areas and lighter teal-blue patches. But the defining feature — the quality that sets Lemurian Blue apart from virtually every other stone — is the iridescent mineral formations that blaze with vibrant electric blue, bright teal, and hints of gold and bronze, creating a surface that appears almost internally lit.

The iridescence comes from labradorescent feldspar crystals within the stone's matrix — the same optical phenomenon found in Norwegian larvikite, but expressed here with an intensity and colour range that is genuinely remarkable. These crystals refract light internally, producing flashes of colour that shift and move as the viewing angle changes. Beneath this visual spectacle, the stone is a dense, hard igneous rock with Mohs 6–7 hardness, strong heat resistance, and the structural integrity demanded of a kitchen worktop.

In2Stone considers Lemurian Blue a once-in-a-lifetime stone for clients who want their kitchen to contain something genuinely rare. It works best as a feature piece — a kitchen island, a bar top, or a statement section where the iridescence can be appreciated under directed lighting. Simple, understated cabinetry in white, charcoal, or dark timber provides the best backdrop, allowing the stone's extraordinary colours to command every atom of attention they deserve.

Frequently Asked

Questions About Lemurian Blue

What causes the electric blue iridescence in Lemurian Blue?
The iridescence is produced by labradorescent feldspar crystals within the stone. Light enters these crystals, refracts between internal structural layers, and exits as vivid flashes of blue, teal, gold, and bronze. The effect is entirely natural — each crystal has been forming for hundreds of millions of years within the Earth's crust.
Is Lemurian Blue granite rare?
Genuinely so. It is quarried exclusively from the Ihosy district in Madagascar's Ihorombe Region — a remote area with limited quarrying infrastructure. Supply is constrained, and the quality of iridescence varies significantly between blocks. Top-grade Lemurian Blue with strong, widespread colour flash is among the rarest and most sought-after natural stones in the world.
Does the iridescence fade over time?
No. The labradorescent effect is a structural property of the feldspar crystals, not a surface treatment or coating. It cannot fade, wear away, or diminish with age. As long as the stone's polished surface is maintained through normal care, the iridescent colour will remain as vivid as the day the stone was cut.
Where is Lemurian Blue granite quarried?
Lemurian Blue comes from the Ihosy district in the Ihorombe Region of southern Madagascar. Madagascar's ancient geological formations — separated from the African continent millions of years ago — have produced a range of unique stones found nowhere else on Earth. Lemurian Blue is the most celebrated of these.
What lighting brings out the best in Lemurian Blue granite?
Directed downlighting is the most effective — recessed ceiling spots or pendant lights positioned above the worktop or island will illuminate the iridescent crystals and maximise the colour flash. Natural daylight also activates the effect beautifully. The key is that the light source needs to hit the surface at changing angles, which is why the iridescence appears to shift and move throughout the day.

"We decided to get bespoke granite work tops for our new kitchen and have to say that we are over the moon with them. From the outset, Ian was very professional when selecting the stone, he listened to what we wanted, went through all of the possibilities that we could have for our worktops and went through the process in detail once we had made a decision. The templateing and fitting was carried out by an incredibly professional and helpful team run by Kev, who knew exactly what they were doing and just got on and made my kitchen look amazing. I would highly recommend In2stone for a helpful, knowledgeable and professional service from start to finish."
