The Stone

See the natural beauty of Kalahari Desert up close — the surface texture, colour depth, and veining that make this granite unique.

Style:

Veined Natural Polished

South African granite with dynamic grey veining swirling across a pale cream base.

Kalahari Desert granite captures the sweeping, windswept character of its namesake landscape. Quarried from the Northern Cape region of southern Africa, this stone presents a dominant off-white to very pale cream base, finely mottled with light grey and warm beige mineral speckling. Across this pale foundation, dynamic wavy veining flows in horizontal to diagonal movements — forming fluid swirls and eddies of light to medium grey, with more defined streaks of darker charcoal cutting through like dried riverbeds across sand. The polished finish enhances the contrast between the pale ground and the grey veining, creating a surface that is lively and moderately bold.

Geologically, this is a stone shaped by the ancient Precambrian formations of southern Africa — some of the oldest rock on Earth. The Mohs 6–7 hardness typical of granite ensures excellent scratch resistance, the igneous formation gives it outstanding heat tolerance, and the dense crystalline structure maintains low porosity when properly sealed. The pale colouring and dynamic veining place Kalahari Desert in the mid-range tier — a stone with real visual interest that offers the performance benefits of granite at a competitive price point.

In2Stone recommends Kalahari Desert for kitchens where movement and character are wanted in a light-coloured stone. The grey veining provides enough visual interest to prevent the surface from feeling bland, while the pale base keeps the room feeling bright and spacious. It pairs well with both contemporary handleless units in white or grey and more traditional painted cabinets in soft neutrals. For homeowners who love the look of marble veining but want granite's superior durability and lower maintenance, Kalahari Desert is a compelling alternative.

Frequently Asked

Questions About Kalahari Desert

Does Kalahari Desert granite look like marble?
It shares some visual qualities with marble — the pale base and flowing grey veining are reminiscent of stones like Carrara. However, Kalahari Desert's veining has a more fluid, swirling quality compared to marble's typically straighter veins. Crucially, as a granite it is significantly harder, less porous, and not sensitive to acids — making it far more practical in a kitchen.
How bold is the veining in Kalahari Desert granite?
Moderately bold. The grey veining forms dynamic swirls and flowing bands that give the surface real character and movement, but it stops short of the intense drama of an exotic veined stone. Fine thread-like veins mix with broader charcoal streaks, creating a balanced pattern that is interesting without being overwhelming.
Is the pale colour practical for a kitchen worktop?
Yes — granite is one of the toughest worktop materials available regardless of colour. When properly sealed, Kalahari Desert's pale surface resists stains effectively. The busy veining pattern also helps disguise minor marks. The key is annual sealing and prompt blotting of dark liquid spills like coffee, red wine, or soy sauce.
Where is Kalahari Desert granite quarried?
This stone comes from the Northern Cape region of southern Africa, close to the Kalahari Desert that gives it its name. Southern Africa's ancient geological formations — some dating back over two billion years — produce a range of distinctive granites with unique colour palettes and mineral compositions.
What thickness does In2Stone supply Kalahari Desert granite in?
Granite worktops are typically supplied in 20mm or 30mm thickness, with 30mm being the most popular choice for kitchen worktops. The extra thickness provides greater structural strength for overhanging sections like breakfast bars, and gives the edge profile more visual presence. In2Stone can advise on the best thickness for your specific kitchen layout.
★★★★★
"We decided to get bespoke granite work tops for our new kitchen and have to say that we are over the moon with them. From the outset, Ian was very professional when selecting the stone, he listened to what we wanted, went through all of the possibilities that we could have for our worktops and went through the process in detail once we had made a decision. The templateing and fitting was carried out by an incredibly professional and helpful team run by Kev, who knew exactly what they were doing and just got on and made my kitchen look amazing. I would highly recommend In2stone for a helpful, knowledgeable and professional service from start to finish."
