The Stone

See the natural beauty of Kuru Grey up close — the surface texture, colour depth, and veining that make this granite unique.

Finnish granite from the Tampere region — cool grey, finely speckled, and quietly composed.

Kuru Grey granite comes from a source quite different to the tropical quarries of India and Brazil — the ancient bedrock of Finland's Tampere region, where geological formations dating back nearly two billion years produce some of Europe's most refined and consistent natural stones. The slab presents a dominant cool light grey base uniformly covered with a dense, granular pattern of fine to small charcoal-grey and black speckles, interspersed with lighter grey elements. There is no veining or directional movement — just a consistent, composed texture that speaks to the stone's geological maturity.

The matte or honed finish visible in this slab strips away any reflective distraction, leaving the raw mineral character fully exposed. Kuru Grey is a stone of restraint — it does not seek attention through bold colour or dramatic veining, but earns respect through consistency, quality, and the kind of quiet authority that only genuinely old stone possesses. Finnish granite is also among the densest and hardest in the world, with Mohs hardness firmly in the 6–7 range and porosity at the very lowest end of the granite spectrum.

In2Stone recommends Kuru Grey for kitchens where understated quality is the design language. It pairs beautifully with Scandinavian-inspired interiors — light timber, white walls, and simple forms — but works equally well in industrial-leaning spaces alongside exposed steel and concrete. The cool grey palette complements both warm and cool accent colours without competing, making it one of the most design-versatile granites in our range.

Frequently Asked

Questions About Kuru Grey

What makes Finnish granite different from Indian or Brazilian granite?
Finnish granites like Kuru Grey are typically denser, more finely grained, and more visually consistent than their warmer-climate counterparts. The geological formations in Finland are among the oldest on Earth — nearly two billion years old — producing stone with extremely tight mineral structures and exceptional uniformity. Finnish granite is also quarried under strict environmental standards.
Does Kuru Grey granite work in a warm-toned kitchen?
Yes, though its cool grey palette naturally leans towards contemporary and Scandinavian schemes. In a warm-toned kitchen, Kuru Grey provides a calming counterpoint — pair it with warm oak or walnut cabinetry and the cool stone balances the warmth effectively. It also works alongside brushed brass hardware if you want to bridge warm and cool elements.
Is the matte finish on Kuru Grey more maintenance-intensive?
Not significantly. A matte or honed finish is marginally more porous than polished, but with annual sealing the difference in stain resistance is minimal. The practical advantage is that matte finishes hide fingerprints, water spots, and minor scratches far better than polished surfaces, making them easier to maintain in daily use.
Where exactly is Kuru Grey quarried?
Kuru Grey comes from the Kuru area near Tampere in central Finland. This region sits on some of Europe's oldest bedrock, producing granites that have been used in architectural and construction applications — including many of Helsinki's landmark buildings — for over a century.
How does Kuru Grey granite perform in terms of heat resistance?
Exceptionally well — like all granite, Kuru Grey was formed at extreme temperatures deep within the Earth's crust and handles hot cookware without concern. You can place hot pans directly on the surface without risk of scorching or discolouration. Trivets are still good practice to avoid thermal shock, but the stone itself is highly heat-tolerant.

"We decided to get bespoke granite work tops for our new kitchen and have to say that we are over the moon with them. From the outset, Ian was very professional when selecting the stone, he listened to what we wanted, went through all of the possibilities that we could have for our worktops and went through the process in detail once we had made a decision. The templateing and fitting was carried out by an incredibly professional and helpful team run by Kev, who knew exactly what they were doing and just got on and made my kitchen look amazing. I would highly recommend In2stone for a helpful, knowledgeable and professional service from start to finish."
