The Stone

See the natural beauty of Nero Marquina up close — the surface texture, colour depth, and veining that make this marble unique.

A distinguished Spanish marble from the Basque Country, where striking white veining cuts through a deep, rich black base.

Nero Marquina is a classic Spanish marble, immediately captivating with its deep, rich black base. Across this intense backdrop, elegant white calcite veining creates a strikingly sophisticated, high-contrast effect. These clean, defined white veins cut through the dark background, establishing a magnificently refined, architectural quality with a bold monochromatic character and timeless appeal.

Sourced from the distinguished quarries of Markina-Xemein in Spain's Basque Country, this marble is a metamorphic rock formed from limestone or dolostone under immense heat and pressure. Over geological millennia, calcite crystals recrystallise into the dense, interlocking mosaic we see today, with impurities like graphite contributing to its profound black colour and other accessory minerals forming the exquisite white veining.

For us at In2Stone, Nero Marquina represents an enduringly elegant choice for distinguished luxury worktops, particularly in kitchens and bathrooms, or as a dramatic splashback. Like all marbles, it carries a unique story and character, and while durable, its calcite composition means it will appreciate thoughtful care – particularly around acids. We apply our passion for craftsmanship to every detail, from hand-templating to precise installation, ensuring your Nero Marquina worktops are not just beautiful but also installed with the honesty and attention they deserve for a lifetime of enjoyment.

Frequently Asked

Questions About Nero Marquina

What defines the visual appearance of Nero Marquina marble?
Nero Marquina is characterised by its deep, rich black base. This intense background is elegantly contrasted by clean, defined white calcite veining, creating a strikingly sophisticated, high-contrast effect that gives it an architectural quality.
What design styles does Nero Marquina marble complement best?
Its bold monochromatic character and refined contrast make Nero Marquina ideal for modern minimalist, classic, or industrial luxury interiors. It pairs beautifully with both light and dark cabinetry, as well as metallic accents, to create a sophisticated focal point.
How should I care for my Nero Marquina marble worktops?
As a natural marble, Nero Marquina is primarily composed of calcite, making it sensitive to acids and more porous than granite. We recommend regular sealing to enhance stain resistance, and promptly wiping up spills, especially acidic liquids like lemon juice or vinegar, to prevent etching.
Where does Nero Marquina marble originate, and what gives it its unique colour?
Nero Marquina is quarried in the Markina-Xemein region of Spain's Basque Country. Its deep black colour primarily comes from graphite impurities present during its metamorphic formation from limestone, while the elegant white veins are composed of pure recrystallised calcite.
Is Nero Marquina a suitable choice for a busy kitchen worktop?
Nero Marquina is an excellent choice for a luxurious kitchen worktop, provided you are mindful of its natural properties. It offers good heat resistance but is softer than granite or quartzite, so we recommend using chopping boards and being diligent with sealing and acid awareness to maintain its pristine beauty.

Clearly attentive to detail, accurate work; it's a perfect fit. 3) Kev and Gav came to fit. Very accommodating. Worked cheerfully around obstacles I had thrown in their path.
