The Stone

See the natural beauty of Impala M Honed up close — the surface texture, colour depth, and veining that make this granite unique.

Honed Impala M from Rustenburg — cool charcoal grain with brownish-grey nuances and a tactile matte surface.

Impala M Honed strips the shine from this medium-grade South African gabbro and lets the raw mineral character take centre stage. The very dark, cool charcoal-grey base is intricately scattered with small, irregularly shaped specks in lighter cool greys, subtle brownish-greys, and occasional very pale grey highlights. Without the reflective sheen of a polished surface, these tonal variations become more visible — the honed finish invites you to see the stone's geological complexity rather than your own reflection.

Performance remains uncompromised. The honed process changes the surface texture but not the stone's core properties — Mohs 6–7 hardness, excellent heat resistance, and the dense mineral structure that keeps porosity low. The practical benefit is significant: the matte finish disguises fingerprints, water marks, and the minor scratches that daily use inevitably brings. For a kitchen worktop that will be used rather than admired from a distance, honed granite is a sensible choice.

In2Stone recommends Impala M Honed for kitchens where dark surfaces need to feel approachable rather than formal. It sits comfortably alongside raw plaster walls, reclaimed timber shelving, and concrete-effect floor tiles. The brownish-grey nuances visible in the honed finish add warmth that the polished version does not reveal, making it a particularly good match for interiors with earthy, natural material palettes.

Frequently Asked

Questions About Impala M Honed

Does honed Impala M look warmer than the polished version?
Yes — the honed finish removes the reflective sheen that cools the stone's appearance, revealing subtle brownish-grey and warm undertones in the mineral grain that are hidden under polish. The result feels more organic and approachable, which works particularly well in kitchens with natural material palettes.
Is honed granite harder to keep clean than polished?
Not at all — in many ways it is easier. Honed surfaces do not show fingerprints, water spots, or streaks the way polished surfaces do. The cleaning routine is identical: warm water, pH-neutral soap, and a microfibre cloth. The only additional consideration is that honed stone is marginally more absorbent, so prompt blotting of spills matters.
Can Impala M Honed be used for a bathroom vanity?
Absolutely. Granite is highly durable and moisture-resistant when properly sealed, making it an excellent choice for bathroom vanity tops. The honed finish adds a contemporary feel and hides water marks better than polished granite, which is especially useful in a bathroom setting.
Is Impala M Honed the same stone as Impala M polished?
Identical stone, different surface treatment. Both are quarried from the Rustenburg Bushveld Complex in South Africa. The honed finish is achieved by stopping the polishing process before the full gloss develops, leaving a smooth matte surface that feels different underhand but retains all the same durability and mineral properties.
How do I seal honed Impala M granite?
Apply a quality impregnating stone sealer once a year. Clean the surface thoroughly first, apply the sealer evenly, allow it to penetrate for the manufacturer's recommended time, then wipe away any excess. The process takes around 30 minutes and significantly improves stain resistance. In2Stone can recommend specific sealers suited to honed granite finishes.
★★★★★
"We decided to get bespoke granite work tops for our new kitchen and have to say that we are over the moon with them. From the outset, Ian was very professional when selecting the stone, he listened to what we wanted, went through all of the possibilities that we could have for our worktops and went through the process in detail once we had made a decision. The templateing and fitting was carried out by an incredibly professional and helpful team run by Kev, who knew exactly what they were doing and just got on and made my kitchen look amazing. I would highly recommend In2stone for a helpful, knowledgeable and professional service from start to finish."
