The Stone

See the natural beauty of Rainbow Bordeaux up close — the surface texture, colour depth, and veining that make this granite unique.

Style:

Veined Speckled Polished

South African granite with cool grey-and-charcoal veining across a light greyish-white granular base.

Rainbow Bordeaux granite comes from South Africa — a country whose ancient geological formations produce stones with a depth of character that belies their often understated surface appearance. The slab presents a light greyish-white base densely patterned with a complex interplay of veining and granular texture. Medium to bold undulating veins run largely horizontally in cool grey and charcoal, with hints of very light warm beige contributing to the mottling. The granular speckled composition is visible throughout, and the polished finish creates a surface that is busy yet cohesive — subtly dynamic rather than theatrically dramatic.

Despite the 'Rainbow' in its trade name, this is not a multi-coloured stone. The palette stays firmly within the cool grey family, with only the faintest warm beige touches breaking the monochrome. The 'Bordeaux' suggests a warmth that the vision analysis reveals to be very subtle — this is a granite that will read as cool and light in most kitchen settings. The granular texture and bold horizontal veining give it a distinctly geological appearance that engineered surfaces cannot replicate. Performance is standard granite: Mohs 6–7 hardness, excellent heat resistance, and low porosity under annual sealing.

In2Stone recommends Rainbow Bordeaux for kitchens where a light, cool worktop with visible mineral character is desired. The horizontal veining adds a sense of breadth and calm that suits both long runs and island installations. It pairs naturally with white, grey, and pale blue cabinetry, and complements chrome, brushed nickel, and stainless steel hardware.

Frequently Asked

Questions About Rainbow Bordeaux

Is Rainbow Bordeaux granite actually colourful?
Despite the 'Rainbow' trade name, the stone is predominantly cool grey and white with only very subtle warm beige hints. It reads as a light, cool-toned granite rather than a colourful one. The name is a trade convention and should not set expectations for a multi-coloured surface.
What direction does the veining run?
The veining runs largely horizontally in undulating medium to bold bands. This horizontal emphasis creates a sense of breadth and calm across the worktop surface, which is particularly effective on long runs and large island installations.
Where in South Africa is Rainbow Bordeaux quarried?
Rainbow Bordeaux comes from the South African quarrying regions — the country has several significant granite-producing areas, particularly in the Northwest, Limpopo, and Mpumalanga provinces. South Africa's ancient geological formations, including parts of the Bushveld Complex, produce a wide variety of dimension stones with excellent structural properties.
Is the granular texture visible in daily use?
Yes — the granular, speckled texture is a visible feature of the stone and part of its natural charm. It confirms the stone is genuine granite rather than an engineered surface. The texture is felt to be smooth under the hand despite its visual grain, and it helps to conceal minor everyday marks and wear.
What colour scheme suits Rainbow Bordeaux?
The cool grey palette makes it a natural partner for white, grey, and blue-toned kitchens. Chrome and brushed nickel hardware complement the cool mineral tones. For contrast, pair with warm timber open shelving or a wooden breakfast bar. Avoid very warm colour schemes where the stone's cool character might feel disconnected.
★★★★★
"We decided to get bespoke granite work tops for our new kitchen and have to say that we are over the moon with them. From the outset, Ian was very professional when selecting the stone, he listened to what we wanted, went through all of the possibilities that we could have for our worktops and went through the process in detail once we had made a decision. The templateing and fitting was carried out by an incredibly professional and helpful team run by Kev, who knew exactly what they were doing and just got on and made my kitchen look amazing. I would highly recommend In2stone for a helpful, knowledgeable and professional service from start to finish."
