Deep obsidian black with a subtle volcanic glass quality — ancient, intense, and profoundly dark.

Neolith Obsidian evokes the elemental beauty of volcanic glass — the naturally formed black mineral created when lava cools rapidly without crystal growth. Its deep black surface carries a subtle depth and lustre that distinguishes it from flat, manufactured blacks, suggesting the natural, geological origin of its volcanic namesake. The Silk finish adds a gentle sheen that enhances this glass-like quality. Part of the Fusion collection and available in three thickness options, Obsidian delivers the most naturally inspired dark surface in the Neolith range. For homeowners who want their dark surfaces to feel geological rather than industrial, Obsidian offers ancient volcanic darkness with modern sintered stone performance.

Frequently Asked

Questions About Obsidian

What does Neolith Obsidian look like?
Neolith Obsidian features a deep black surface with a subtle volcanic glass quality that distinguishes it from flat, manufactured blacks. The Silk finish adds a gentle lustre suggesting the natural, geological origin of its volcanic namesake — obsidian, the naturally formed glass created when lava cools rapidly. Ancient, intense, and profoundly dark.
How does Obsidian compare to other Neolith black surfaces?
Obsidian sits between the textured Basalt Black and the pure-colour Nero. While Basalt Black has visible volcanic grain and Nero is completely flat, Obsidian has a subtle depth and lustre that suggests volcanic glass — more natural than Nero but smoother than Basalt Black. It is the most geologically inspired of Neolith's dark surfaces.
What kitchen styles suit Obsidian?
Obsidian works beautifully in nature-inspired contemporary, geological modern, and atmospheric design schemes where dark surfaces feel natural rather than industrial. It pairs well with warm timber, natural stone accessories, rough-hewn textures, and warm ambient lighting. The volcanic character creates a connection to the natural world that purely solid blacks cannot achieve.
Is Obsidian scratch-resistant?
Yes. Like all Neolith surfaces, Obsidian achieves exceptional scratch resistance through the sintering process. The Silk finish is also practical in daily use — far more forgiving of everyday surface marks than a fully polished black surface. While we recommend chopping boards for knife blade longevity, the surface handles daily kitchen use without concern.
Can Obsidian be used for feature lighting projects?
Obsidian responds beautifully to creative lighting design. Its subtle glass-like lustre interacts with warm, directional lighting to create shifting reflections and depth effects. Under-cabinet LED strips, pendant lights, and recessed spotlights all bring different qualities out of the surface. In well-lit installations, Obsidian becomes an actively dynamic element of the kitchen design.

"Excellent Service and Beautiful Results - Highly Recommended! I recently had In2stone install new quartz worktops in my kitchen, and I couldn't be happier with the results. From start to finish, the experience was completely stress-free. The team was not only competitively priced but also incredibly friendly and professional throughout the entire process. They handled everything seamlessly - removing the existing sink, hob, and old laminate worktops before fitting the new quartz surfaces. The finished worktops are absolutely beautiful and have transformed my kitchen into a modern, minimalist space that I love spending time in. The quality of workmanship is outstanding, and the attention to detail really shows. I'm a very satisfied customer and would highly recommend In2stone to anyone considering new worktops. Well done to the entire team - you've exceeded my expectations!"
