The Stone

See the natural beauty of Impala D Honed up close — the surface texture, colour depth, and veining that make this granite unique.

Honed Rustenburg gabbro with a soft matte finish that reveals warm grey-brown tones in its mineral grain.

Impala D Honed takes the same premium South African gabbro from Rustenburg and presents it without the mirror-like gloss of its polished sibling. The result is a deep charcoal surface with a smooth, matte texture that feels softer and more contemporary underhand. The vision analysis reveals a busy, random pattern of fine to medium granular flecks in lighter grey, warm brown-grey, and very dark grey, with subtle hints of dark greenish-grey woven throughout — tonal details that the honed finish brings forward where polish would have hidden them behind reflections.

The honed process removes the surface sheen but leaves the stone's performance intact. Impala D retains its full Mohs 6–7 hardness, its resistance to heat and scratching, and its dense mineral structure. The practical advantage of the honed finish is its ability to disguise fingerprints, water spots, and minor surface marks — making it a more forgiving choice for households where the kitchen is the centre of daily life.

In2Stone often recommends the honed variant for clients who love dark worktops but want to avoid the maintenance of keeping a polished surface looking pristine. It pairs beautifully with limed oak cabinetry, concrete-effect floor tiles, and matt black hardware. The understated finish lets the natural mineral character speak without competing with other design elements in the room.

Frequently Asked

Questions About Impala D Honed

How does honed Impala D differ from the polished version?
The honed finish removes the high-gloss sheen, leaving a smooth matte surface that feels softer to the touch. Visually, it reveals warm brown-grey and greenish-grey tonal shifts in the mineral grain that are less visible under a polished surface. Practically, it hides fingerprints and water marks far better than the polished version.
What kitchen designs suit Impala D Honed best?
The matte finish works particularly well in Scandinavian-inspired schemes with light timber, in industrial kitchens alongside exposed brick and concrete, and in contemporary spaces where flat, non-reflective surfaces define the aesthetic. It pairs well with both light and dark cabinetry, and complements matt black tapware and hardware.
Is honed granite more prone to staining than polished?
A honed surface is marginally more porous than polished because the polishing process compresses the uppermost layer of stone. However, with proper annual sealing, the difference in stain resistance is minimal. The key is to blot spills — especially oil, red wine, and coffee — promptly rather than letting them sit.
Does Impala D Honed come from the same quarry as the polished version?
Yes — all Impala D variants come from the same Rustenburg Bushveld Complex in South Africa's Northwest Province. The difference is entirely in the surface treatment applied after the slab is cut. The underlying stone, its mineral composition, and its performance characteristics are identical.
Can I use chopping boards directly on honed granite?
While Impala D is hard enough to resist knife marks under normal use, we always recommend using chopping boards. This protects both the stone's surface finish and your knives — granite is hard enough to dull blade edges quickly. The honed finish is slightly more vulnerable to visible scratching than polished, so boards are sensible practice.

"We decided to get bespoke granite work tops for our new kitchen and have to say that we are over the moon with them. From the outset, Ian was very professional when selecting the stone, he listened to what we wanted, went through all of the possibilities that we could have for our worktops and went through the process in detail once we had made a decision. The templateing and fitting was carried out by an incredibly professional and helpful team run by Kev, who knew exactly what they were doing and just got on and made my kitchen look amazing. I would highly recommend In2stone for a helpful, knowledgeable and professional service from start to finish."
