The Stone

See the natural beauty of Nero Profundo up close — the surface texture, colour depth, and veining that make this granite unique.

Speckled Polished Natural

South Indian granite in near-black charcoal with fine granular speckling and a subtle reflective shimmer.

Nero Profundo granite comes from South India — a region whose ancient Precambrian shield rocks produce some of the world's finest dark granites. The slab presents a dominant very dark charcoal base that reads almost black, covered in a dense random pattern of fine irregular speckles and flecks in very dark grey. Among these, subtle near-reflective darker grey particles and microscopic lighter points are sparsely scattered, creating a finely textured surface with a quiet inner shimmer rather than any bold pattern. The name — Italian for 'deep black' — accurately captures both the stone's depth of colour and its sense of quiet sophistication.

Nero Profundo occupies the refined end of the dark granite spectrum. Where some dark granites have visible salt-and-pepper speckling or dramatic mineral formations, this stone keeps its texture almost invisible from normal viewing distance, revealing its granular detail only upon close inspection. The polished finish enhances this subtlety — the surface carries a smooth sheen with micro-scale reflective variation rather than uniform gloss. Geologically, it performs as expected for a true South Indian granite: Mohs 6–7 hardness, very low porosity, and excellent resistance to heat, scratching, and chemical attack.

In2Stone recommends Nero Profundo for clients who want the darkest, most understated natural stone available without stepping into absolute black territory. The fine granular texture ensures it reads as genuine stone rather than an engineered surface, while the near-black colour brings drama without complexity. It works powerfully alongside white cabinetry for maximum contrast, or with charcoal and gunmetal finishes for a rich, monochromatic scheme.

Frequently Asked

Questions About Nero Profundo

How dark is Nero Profundo granite?
Very dark — it reads almost black from normal viewing distance. Unlike absolute black granites which aim for complete uniformity, Nero Profundo has a very fine granular texture with microscopic lighter points that give it a subtle shimmer and authentic natural stone character. It sits between a plain black surface and a visibly speckled dark granite.
Does Nero Profundo look like an engineered surface?
No. While it is one of the most minimally patterned dark granites available, the fine irregular speckling and subtle reflective variation ensure it reads as natural stone rather than manufactured material. The micro-scale texture becomes apparent under directional lighting and at close viewing distance, confirming its geological authenticity.
Where in South India is Nero Profundo quarried?
Nero Profundo comes from the South Indian quarrying regions — likely Karnataka or Tamil Nadu — which sit on some of the oldest geological formations on the Indian subcontinent. The Precambrian shield rocks in these areas have been producing high-quality dark granites for the international stone trade for decades.
What is the maintenance like for such a dark granite?
Standard granite maintenance — annual sealing with a quality impregnating sealer, daily cleaning with warm water and pH-neutral soap. The dark colour conceals most everyday marks effectively. The main consideration is that dust and light-coloured debris may be slightly more visible on very dark polished surfaces, so regular wiping keeps it looking its best.
What design schemes work best with Nero Profundo?
The near-black colour is extremely versatile as a design anchor. White or pale grey cabinetry creates a clean, high-contrast contemporary look. Warm timber adds natural balance. Charcoal and gunmetal create a sophisticated tonal scheme. Brushed brass or gold hardware provides a warm metallic accent against the dark stone. Avoid combining with too many other dark surfaces unless a deliberately moody interior is the goal.
★★★★★
"We decided to get bespoke granite work tops for our new kitchen and have to say that we are over the moon with them. From the outset, Ian was very professional when selecting the stone, he listened to what we wanted, went through all of the possibilities that we could have for our worktops and went through the process in detail once we had made a decision. The templateing and fitting was carried out by an incredibly professional and helpful team run by Kev, who knew exactly what they were doing and just got on and made my kitchen look amazing. I would highly recommend In2stone for a helpful, knowledgeable and professional service from start to finish."
