The Stone

See the natural beauty of Ardesia up close — the surface texture, colour depth, and veining that make this slate unique.

Sweeping oceanic veining in charcoal and silver — Ligurian slate with over two millennia of quarrying heritage, refined for contemporary interiors.

Ardesia is the original Italian slate — a name so deeply woven into Italy's stone heritage that it became the Italian word for slate itself. Quarried in Liguria's Val Fontanabuona since before the Roman era, this fine-grained metamorphic stone presents a dramatic deep charcoal-grey surface swept with directional veining in lighter silver-grey and subtle blue-green undertones that create an almost oceanic sense of movement. The honed finish reveals the intricate foliated layering within the stone, along with fine white mineral traces that add depth and metamorphic sophistication to the surface. Ardesia's practical credentials are equally impressive: with water absorption of just 0.39% and exceptional heat resistance, it handles the demands of a busy kitchen with quiet confidence. Unlike marble or onyx, you can place a hot pan directly on this surface without fear. In2stone's craftsmen appreciate the particular character Ardesia brings — a stone that carries over two thousand years of Italian quarrying tradition into contemporary British kitchens with effortless authority.

Frequently Asked

Questions About Ardesia

What makes Ardesia slate different from other slate varieties?
Ardesia is the original Italian slate from Liguria's Val Fontanabuona, quarried for over 2,200 years. It has a distinctive charcoal-grey base with sweeping silver veining and blue-green undertones that set it apart from the more uniformly black Brazilian and other Italian slates. Its fine grain and extremely low water absorption (0.39%) make it one of the highest-quality slates available for worktop applications.
Can I place hot pans directly on Ardesia slate?
Yes — Ardesia slate has exceptional heat resistance, one of its genuine advantages over marble, onyx, and even some granites. You can place hot pots and pans directly on the surface without damage. However, as best practice, we still recommend using trivets to protect the sealed surface and extend the life of the sealer.
Does Ardesia slate need sealing?
Despite its naturally very low porosity (0.39% water absorption), we recommend applying a professional impregnating sealer at installation and resealing every one to two years. This provides additional stain protection, particularly in kitchen environments where oils and coloured liquids are common. The sealing process is straightforward and takes only minutes.
What is the significance of the name Ardesia?
Ardesia is simply the Italian word for slate, and the stone's connection to the Ligurian town of Lavagna is so deep that the town's name itself derives from the Latin word for the stone. The term also gave Italian its word for blackboard — lavagna. This stone is quite literally the original slate, with a heritage stretching back over two millennia.
How does In2stone fabricate Ardesia slate worktops?
Our craftsmen work with the natural directional veining of each slab, orienting the silver-grey striations to flow across your worktop in the most visually compelling direction. The honed finish is machine-ground to a smooth, flat surface that retains the stone's natural colour depth while providing a practical, easy-to-clean surface for daily kitchen use.
★★★★★
"Excellent Service and Beautiful Results - Highly Recommended! I recently had In2stone install new quartz worktops in my kitchen, and I couldn't be happier with the results. From start to finish, the experience was completely stress-free. The team was not only competitively priced but also incredibly friendly and professional throughout the entire process. They handled everything seamlessly - removing the existing sink, hob, and old laminate worktops before fitting the new quartz surfaces. The finished worktops are absolutely beautiful and have transformed my kitchen into a modern, minimalist space that I love spending time in. The quality of workmanship is outstanding, and the attention to detail really shows. I'm a very satisfied customer and would highly recommend In2stone to anyone considering new worktops. Well done to the entire team - you've exceeded my expectations!"
