The Stone

See the natural beauty of Alabama White up close — the surface texture, colour depth, and veining that make this marble unique.

A brilliantly white American marble from Alabama's legendary Sylacauga belt — the same deposit that graces the US Supreme Court and the Lincoln Memorial.

Alabama White is a striking marble quarried from the famous Sylacauga marble belt in Alabama, United States — a geological formation stretching 32 miles long, 1.5 miles wide, and up to 600 feet deep. This is the stone that built the US Supreme Court and the Lincoln Memorial, and its purity and brilliance have made it one of America's most treasured natural resources. The surface presents a bright, crisp white base swept with dramatic grey veining that cascades diagonally across the polished face in bold, flowing gestures. The contrast between the pure white ground and the confident grey movement creates a marble of real visual authority — one that commands attention without shouting. With exceptional purity and a Mohs hardness typical of fine calcite marbles, Alabama White responds well to polished or honed finishes. Regular sealing every six to twelve months keeps the surface protected, and pH-neutral cleaners preserve its brilliant white character. At In2stone, we treat every slab of natural marble with the craftsmanship it deserves — because a stone with this heritage demands nothing less.

Frequently Asked

Questions About Alabama White

What is the history behind Alabama White marble?
Alabama White marble comes from the legendary Sylacauga marble belt in Alabama, United States — a geological formation stretching 32 miles long, 1.5 miles wide, and up to 600 feet deep. This marble has been quarried since the 19th century and was used to build some of America's most iconic structures, including the US Supreme Court building and the Lincoln Memorial. Its exceptional purity and whiteness made it one of the most prized building stones in American history.
How does Alabama White marble compare to Italian white marbles?
Alabama White marble holds its own against Italian varieties in terms of purity and quality. While Italian marbles like Carrara and Statuario are more widely known in the European market, Alabama White is prized for its exceptionally pure white base and bold grey veining. The geological conditions in Sylacauga produced a marble of remarkable consistency and brilliance that rivals the finest European deposits.
Is Alabama White marble suitable for high-traffic kitchen worktops?
Alabama White marble can be used for kitchen worktops with proper care and realistic expectations. Like all marbles, it requires regular sealing, prompt attention to acidic spills, and the use of chopping boards and trivets. The bold grey veining on white actually helps mask minor wear — but if you want a completely worry-free surface for a very busy kitchen, engineered quartz might be a more practical alternative.
What thickness options are available for Alabama White marble worktops?
Alabama White marble is typically available in 20mm (standard) and 30mm (premium) thicknesses. The 20mm option is suitable for most kitchen worktop applications and offers a clean, contemporary look. The 30mm thickness provides a more substantial, traditional appearance and is recommended for larger kitchen islands where visual weight adds to the design impact. At In2stone, we can advise on the best thickness for your specific project.
Does Alabama White marble etch easily?
All marble is susceptible to etching from acidic substances such as lemon juice, vinegar, wine, and tomato sauce. Alabama White's bright white surface can make etch marks more visible than on darker or more heavily veined marbles. However, minor etching can often be polished out by a professional stone restoration specialist, and a honed finish significantly reduces the visibility of etch marks compared to a polished finish.
